94 850 n/a engine swap

Post by anmartin44 »

i have a 94 n/a with 150k with a blown engine. i bought it for 400 bucks to put a different engine it that i already have. however ive been thinking i want to find a younger engine for cause the one i have has 240k on it. it runs good but not sure if its worth my time.

So i found a new arrival at the junkyard that i go to with only 101k...but it's from a 97 and it's the low pressure turbo. how compatible is this engine with my 94 if i were to do a full swap? would i need to get the tranny along with ECU? do i need to rewire mine to work with OBD II?
any insite would awesome.
Thanks

It is not worth it. You would have to swap out everything. If you car was a Turbo car to begin with, then I would say do it but being your car is NA, then you should just drop in an NA motor.

If you really want to do it, you would have to pull everything. This is including the trans, gauges, wiring, ECUs, etc... Even then I don't see the car being able to run. The electronics are night and day. Not to mention the exhaust and intake system.

Seriously, you will end up putting so much time and money into this that it is not worth it. I am not trying to put you down or anything, I am just trying to tell you how it is.

FCP...
hey i wasn't trying to be combative, i was just correcting a grammar error that i made. sorry about the perceived tone there.
i agree with u about the car, probably way more work than i want to get myself into (and way more than my wife will let me get into).

hey... i bought the car for $400 for the body cause i was going to put a different engine in it. went a different direction and now i dont really want to put the 240k engine that i have in it. i believe the engine seized due to lack of oil. do you know if thats repairable/rebuildable?

I ended up putting the motor with 242k on it in the car. I really had to do minimal work to the engine as it was in great shape. I changed timing belt, WP, cleaned pcv system and changed oil and tranny fluid. the engine had been sitting for almost 2 1/2 years and when i plugged everything in....and turned the key....it fired right up! the engine is very smooth and it is now my daily driver. i cleared all the codes from the previous cars computer and I have not yet got a code after close to 5000 miles on the swap. oh..and it doesn't hardly burn any oil!

so overall i had a very good experience with my first engine swap. Oh and thanks to forum member "wheelsup" for his write up on the engine removal. I took the motor out and put it in from the top by myself except for very last part where my wife lowered it real slow as I lined up the mounts.

The entire front suspension is trashed so i have all kinds of goodies coming in the mail after Christmas! I'll update that project in a couple weeks.

Thank You MVS for making Volvo ownership possible!

Merry Christmas!
Andrew

I'm toying with the idea of doing an engine swap myself so I may be asking you questions within the coming year. lol
