740 1997 burning lots of oil

Hi there

I was hoping someone could help me!!, I have a volvo 740 R reg 1997, which has started to burn lots of oil I.E 2.5lt in 3/4 days. any advise where to start looking would be good, I do know that it is not leaking oil out the bottom of the car, and from the look of the back of the car i would say it is coming out of the exhaust.
