2000 Volvo S40: Sometimes it Won't Start
Re: s40 volvo yr 2000 sometimes car not starting
but there are days that i drive it all day. start and stop and not a problem. its strange that it is very random.
car had been fine for months. on saturday drove it 1 mile and ran into a store. Came out and it would not start. 3 hours later still not starting. Gave up on the car and walked home. Went back early Sunday and it started right up.

I'm still having the same problem. When the engine gets hot, something in the electrical system is preventing the starter relay from getting a ground. As far as I can see the ground comes from the immobilizer unit, why it come from there I don't understand. I have changed the starter and the engine speed sensor. still the same problem. I am able to rapidly cool the engine speed sensor then start the car. This is why I changed the part. But I'm still having the problem. I hope I don't have a bad immobilizer unit, lots of $$$$ for the unit.

I'm afraid after all your suffering you are right on with the immobilizer being faulty. Along with that you will need an antenna ring and new keys to be programmed. We have sold these numbers in the past to fix a faulty immobilizer.
Immobilizer - 30620876
antenna ring - 30814936
cut key - 30857729 x2

my car had gone for 7 months with out a problem. and yesterday i had to let it set for about 20 minutes before it would start again. will there just be one day my car will not start at all? this has been going on for 2 years with it.
Just thought I would let you know three different shops. New starter, battery, everything cleaned, all cable, and still had the same problem as you! Same car 2000 S40. Would only do it for me mechanics thought I was crazy. Finally my neighbor saw it happened and he changed the neutral relay switch, and the car has been fine. I would have never guess it to be that seeing I brought it to a Volvo dealer and even they didn't know after $333.00. It is worth a shot.

I might be having a similar problem. Where is the neutral relay switch located?
Hi,
It is located on top of the transmission. It is not a common thing for people to think is the problem, but after spending alot of money on all the other common things to make a car start, we have not had a problem since. Good luck!
