Watch and try not to get sick. They drain the oil then put sodium silicate into the crankcase and rev the engine.

It is astonishing that it made it 4 minutes. After spending my life - from age 14 on - trying to keep cars alive the sadistic side of me wants to go apply for that job.
That said - it almost made me puke. What a waste of resources.

How much can you get for your car with that program?
We don't know what problems that car had, but if it was anything like mine, it was probably a good deal for the former owner. If the trans was bad on that car, it probably would have cost the owner more than the car was worth to get it fixed. Dont forget, these cars are very expensive to repair, even if you can do some of the work yourself.

Yes, it's sad for a car that's known to have 10 more years to go...
But in their defense, I just checked out the Kelly Blue Book value of the earliest S80 car to be around $5500. If the S80 qualifies for a $3500 or a $4500 rebate on their next car, then it is more practical than paying for the notoriously frequent repairs or the risks of selling it to another party. People who are turning in the cars are the ones who can afford to replace it. ( they don't really need government aid in the first place..) Others will continue to maintain the love of their life... 240/740/850...

I watched the whole of it, and if this is the T6 model, they're running it at 4,000 RPM (twice the recommended) and it still took 4 minutes to kill, whereas video of a Jeep Cherokee was Done in 30 Seconds. (no pun intended)
Just like they crash-test new cars, maybe this engine destruction test can be used to evaluate how well the cars run under the standard destruction.... and they can bench-test this without destroying the chassis.
Anyway out of all seriousness, I no longer have my Volvo, and it was painful to have to let it go when you're heavily invested in it... but sometime in the future I'll be back to owning the brand I grew up with.

I was just on the radio here in Denver -- 630AM "KHOW" -- speaking about this, and how much it hurts to watch the destruction of Volvos.

I saw this on Volvolution this morning. It just made me sick. There is no way they received the value of that car with the cash for clunkers program. They would have been better off selling that car to a Volvo person like us, make more money on it then the C4C gave them, and then brought what they wanted.

I'm not sure how they even qualified with the S80. According to the website your clunker has to get 18 or less mpg and the S80 is rated at 19.
Due to the amount of problems I've had with my car, if I could get $4500 for it I would definitely be tempted to take it. And once it's murdered I would know that that no unsuspecting buyer would be saddled with the enormous repair bills.

Well that thoroughly ruined my day. Stupid hicks.
Obama's an idiot. All I could think of while watching that (didn't make it all the way through) was about how my engine sounds exactly like that (at least before it started "crying").
I could have swapped that engine into my normally aspirated '99 S80.
What a waste of engineering and a resilient, quality car.

I just don't get how that car qualified for the "CFC" program. I know people with American gas hogs that couldn't qualify for it. Not to mention, that thing is worth more than $4500? No?
