The original picture looks a lot like the rear o2 sensor I just changed this weekend. It looks like it's going into the cat, where the rear sensor goes. holler1's pic looks like the front sensor.

holler,

i can't really make it out from your picture because it was taken too close.
I updated m pics and added the arrow so that maybe someone can surely say it is the front or the rear o2.

thanks for your help.

Yeah, I think you're right. On my car, the front sensor is right below the turbo. Maybe the 99 is a little different. Here is another photo of mine (front) from directly below.

I really think it looks like your rear sensor but I'm suprised none of the more experienced people has given you a firm answer. If you can show a pic of the side of your car and show how far back it is that might make it clearer.

Even once you ID it though, the rear sensor was really hard to do. If I hadn't read here to buy PB blaster to loosen the sensor it wouldn't have worked. Even then it took about 1/2 an hour of pulling as hard as I could. And you need a good bit of gear, a 12" extension a flexibile joint before the special o2 socket. I don't know what your experience level is but it was right at the limit of what I can do by myself on this car.

I wouldn't be surprised if these are eBay specials. Bosch "OE direct fit" is only way to go.

have you done a spark plug before?
an O2 is not much different
go to volvospeed.com and read bay13 about the sensor
chill your anxiety and get under the car and look
if you want, go buy an O2 socket or use the 7/8
the clip holding the wire in is not hard to get out
when I did mine on my 850, I did both
