My brother and I drove a 1975 mb 240d through high school. I wish i still had it. it took about 60 sedonds to get up to speed on the freeway (2.4l diesel with 42 hp). it was a frickin tank and i never got it to 100 mph. it got like 35 mpg though. My father-in-law just picked up a 59 simca aronde p90 for like fifty bucks from some old lady who had it in her garage. hasn't been liscensed in like 30 years but supposedly ran when it was parked. it's our summer project.
1994 850 na green 187k on body, 275k on motor(backwards?), unrestricted airbox, 960 TB, persus wheels, Lowered, IPD poly upper and trans mounts.

I had a Jetta once. 1997 GT, black on black. Cute little car, though I could never for the life of me figure out what that "GT" badge stood for :?

1985 Saab 900 (base 8v). Quite possibly the best car ever built, except for its total and complete lack of power. I grew up with this car my entire life, learned to drive in it, and then it was passed down to me. The odometer stopped working at 255,xxx miles (I guess it was just tired of flipping - we figured it had over 300,000), and it still got up and ran every morning for 20 years until the oil pump stopped working in late 2004 and the engine tore itself apart.

Those Swedes sure know how to build cars

what that "GT" badge stood for
Gran Turismo. It was put there to make people think they were buying a sports saloon. The only thing it did in the UK was to put up the annual insurance premium as the insurance companies said that if VW claimed it was a sports saloon it had to be insured as one.

Well I know what the "GT" badge stands for but there was absolutely no difference between the GT and a base Jetta 2.0. Didn't even have any power goodies, "go fast" parts or suspension upgrades that generally come with "GT" badges

So I upped it one more - Slapped a Hurst T-Handle on it, got the Hurst Equipped badge and installed it right next to that "GT" on the back. Actually looked factory and the kid I sold it to was so happy he just bought at "HURST GT" for an awesome price

62 VW Bug – it lasted 3 months before I rolled it (I was 16)
74 Triumph Spitfire Mark IV – My dad received this semi-running as a payment for a bad debt and it needing brakes, clutch, interior, top, and paint and I fixed it all in about a year and sold it when I was 17 to purchase the Fiat. I put less than 150 miles on it.
76 Fiat Spider 124 – It had 20K miles on it when I got it and I put 130K miles, 2 engines and 5 transmissions in that car. The original drivetrain would do 124mph before I blew the engine at 85K miles (17-22 years old).
84 BMW 318i – I got it with 100K on it and put another 150K and sold it for what I purchased it for. (In my late 20’s).
89 Porsche 944T – This was a rocket. Parts were $$$. I had it in my early 40’s. I tracked this car and traded it for a Harley Softail.

If I could have any of them in new condition it would probably be the Fiat. It was a special edition car that I got from a widow of a USAF Officer who only took it out on weekends. I drove it like I stole it and was constantly finding "the weakest link".

'96 854 - died an early death with 184K miles. Killed by the front end of an LTD on a suicide mission (T-boned and both cars totaled).

First in america!

My one and only other Euro experience. When VW came out with the new Jetta-III, they had problems manufacturing the rear drum brakes and the cars were ALL delayed. My wife ordered one brand new but it (an devery other one) was late. They gave us a free upgrade to disc brakes in the rear (as long as we owned the car we had to pretend it was a different model when getting brake shoes).

I was a maniac waiting to get her the new car. I waged a phone campaign and was put in touch with someone who put me in touch with someone who put me in touch.......eventually I talked on the phone to the actual dockworker unloading the ship in New Jersey. He drove our car off first.

So, I can truly say, we owned the first production Jetta-III on American soil :)
