power steering fluid

Post by jburke »

I have a '98 V70. The power steering fluid -- is there any alternative to the Volvo fluid the dealer sells? It's a little pricey.

JB,
Somewhere in the manual it says that ATF is recommended for the power steering. I used Mobil Synthetic ATF and it has made a noticeable difference to the steering feel. I used a suction device to pump out the existing fluid from the reservoir and refilled it with ATF. Make sure to fill the right amount - check it while it is cold and hot. The cap on the reservoir has the markings.

hope that helps..

I think later model Volvos require a better fluid than ATF. You might try Redline's or Lubegard's power steering fluid.

Plain old ATF seems to do the job !

From the horse's mouth - so to speak.

Thanks for the replies on this thread.

So, does this mean that I have to pump out the old power steering fluid or can I just add ATF to what is in there currently, which is anyone's guess -- I bought the car used from a dealer a couple months ago.

When I did mine, I used a turkey baster to suck out as much of the old fluid as possible and then topped the reservoir off with the new stuff.
