Hearter core change

Post by tom39 »

98 S70 T5
Looking to change out my leaking heater core. Wanted to make sure I have everything I needed before getting started.

Here is the items I have on my list thus far:
1 - Heater core
2 - Heater core O-rings
2 - Firewall O-rings
2 - Gallon antifreeze
2 - Gallon Distilled water

So what do you think? Did I forget anything? Is there something I would want to replace while I am in there?

Thajks

a beer or two and patience....

seriously have a look at the heater hoses in the engine compartiment check if they are in good cond...

keep a garbage bag under the connection between the heater core and the hoses to catch the coolant when you split those two apart, just to avoid having coolant on ur floor...

sounds about compleate ....i did the same job not too long ago, the result was great and came with a nice back ache...lolllll

cheers !

Rather than just getting the firewall O rings you might want to get the complete kit that has the new spacers, O rings, and clips. I broke one of my clips while removing it and I was very glad that I had ordered new ones and had them on hand. My old spacers were a bit of a mess as well.

Is this the kit you are refering to? I pulled the image off the FCP Groton site.

The parts in tom39's post are the ones I was referring to. On a side note, if you do replace the parts with the kit parts it is all or nothing, don't try to mix and match things on a component basis.

The OEM clips and spacers don't play well with the after market replacement parts. You will likely need to yank some of the OEM stuff out of the respective hole in the firewall to make the aftermarket stuff happy since an additional spacer and O ring tends to get stuck in there.

Just changed my core tonight. Very easy job (1 beer).

This helped

I also flushed my cooling system at the same time. When I changed the core the only thing in the cooling system was water. So water is the only thing that spilled in the car.

I believe FCP calls it a heater hose junction kit, you should go on and get it while you are in that deep. Your old one is super brittle by now and is very easy to crack, the good thing about the kit is that includes all of the orings and spacers you will need for the job.

Well its done. WOW, was that easier than I thought. Thank you everyone for all your help.
BTW installing new o-rings, clips and spacers at the firewall was a great extra step and suggestion. The old spacers had been in there so long that they were brittle and literally fell apart. It was nice to have all the parts when doing the job.

Again Thank You All

FYI: Core is working great except that I did not rinse the protective coating off the new core and now have a slight oily smell coming from the vent. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will go away soon.

So my tip for the day is: Rinse the protective coating from the core before install.
