Volvo 850 starts but shuts off after 20-30 seconds - HELP!

Post by bertoneboy »

My 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo has just had the ECM replaced, that didn't fix the problem, sensors checked and nothing found by my mechanic. It's now heading for a Volvo dealership.

The past year has been hell on my car, over $ 7,000 worth of mechanical work done and here is the latest:

My A/C compressor was broken, causing problems with the serpentine belt. The A/C compressor is fixed but I'm still having problems keeping the car running after 20-30 seconds. It starts just fine, on a dime infact, but just like clock work the car shuts off in 20-30 seconds. I've been told by the mechanic that the ECM signals on the previous unit may have been bad so we replaced that. Some other sensors he mentioned were replaced as well and after hours of troubleshooting, he gave up.

I'm now at a loss. I paid over $ 750 to the mechanic and still had my car towed to Volvo dealership.

The car has had new cylinder heads and a number of top-quality engine work done in the past year by my authorized Volvo dealership at a cost of over $ 7,000. This is why I'm so frustrated with more problems.

It is an 850 Turbo Special Platinum Edition Sedan which I've treasured for years. I have'n been able to drive it for 4 months now! (Not since December).

Has anybody had a similar problem ? Is this a Hall Effect issue ? Spark plugs were changed last July when major engine work was done. The mechanic thought it is an electrical problem and at one point mentioned that maybe nothing can be done??!!!?!??

Fuel is getting passed just fine (I'm told). And the car will start EVERY TIME. If you place your foot on the as pedal and rev it up over 3,000 rpms, it will continue running but leaving your foot off the gas pedal, about 20 seconds will cause the car to stop.

If anyone has any information or can point me in the right direction I'd love to hear from them. In the past 2 years this car has had more than $ 18,000 worth of mechanical and body work done. I simply am going bankrupt in the process of keeping my treasured Volvo.

Thank you.
