Code help

Post by kurai »

I just got my codes read today and these were my results...

p0730: gear ratio incorrect

p0331: knock sensor 2 circuit range malfunction

p0400: EGR flow malfunction

Any help on what these mean, how serious they are, or how to fix them would be great.

thanks

The P0730 usually points to a bad PNP switch.

The P0331 is what it says, either a bad rear knock sensor or, more likely, a bad connector to it.

P0400 means that the hole from the EGR valve to the intake manifold is completely plugged with carbon deposits. The carbon deposits are as hard as a rock and they were tough to clean out even with the intake manifold removed. I think MIJ cleared his without removing the manifold and there should be a writeup in the repair database.

The latter two codes will hinder performance and mileage but you can drive forever with them and there are no permanent ill effects. If the P0730 is causing the transmission to be in limp mode (Starting in third gear and the flashing up arrow light) it will cook the transmission internally if you drive it very much.

At the end of the day you need to remove the intake manifold to get to the rear knock sensor so that is a ducky time to service the PCV system and clean up the EGR hole. The additional parts you will need beyond the standard PCV parts are a new throttle body gasket and a new EGR gasket. You may or may not need a new knock sensor.

Do you have issues w/ your reverse lights? That would help confirm the PNP issue.

Hmm...clean out/replace your PNP switch anyhow, hopefully it fixes everything. The reason I ask is because a classic symptom of a failing PNP switch is a lack of reverse lights.
