1988 240 starter removal

My friend picked up a 240 that wouldn't start. He's pretty sure the starter solenoid went bad, and wants to get it tested, so I'm trying to pull the starter out for him.

I checked the manual, and it says to just remove the two bolts holding it to the engine after removing the wires. Simple enough, I managed to back the lower bolt out, but the other one seems impossible to get to.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

This is one of those jobs where you need rubber bones to twist into a confined space. However, to test the solenoid you do not need to remove the starter motor. The attached also applies to the '88 240:
