timing belt cover removal

it appears straight foreward to remove timing belt cover for my volvo 440 1996 but access to release seems a little dificult and i do not want to remove anything i do not have to. how do i gain access to the release points on the cover?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Going from memory there are 4 screws, 1 bolt and a spring clip holding the cover in place.

The screws and clip are easy to see but the bolt is tucked away at the bottom right as you look at the engine.

the problem i have got is that the access to these release points is somwwhat restricted. are there any engine componants that need to be removed before access can be gained?

The only things to be taken off are the auxiliary drive belt(s) and the cover. The time allowed for changing the belt is 1.4 hours so there isn't a lot of time to remove and replace loads of stuff.

Do you have the instructions for this job?

i have a set of instructions to replace but it does not show removel of the cover. i haver tried to get a manual but they have been withdrawn from sale at the shops cause of age.

My instructions don't include that either.

There are several Haynes manuals on eBay at the moment. Some only go to 1992 but quite a few cover up to 1997.
