My son's '96 base model didn't have the keyless remote but the wiring was all there. I actually installed an older '94 system that I bought off of eBay and it works just fine.

Ozark Lee, thanks a TON for the helpful pictures and info.
I got the serial numbers and such and my stepfather managed to find 'em for me (for my birthday!) on Ebay for ridiculously cheap.
The setting up was amazingly easy once we worked out whether we needed key position one or two, and also worked out that we needed to set both remotes at the same time
I actually feel a lot safer now with these remotes! If I'm ever running from zombies or even more plausible threats, I'll be able to get into my car in no time flat.
I was wondering, also:
setting up the keyless entry made the alarm system start working again to a certain extent. The light on the dashboard works, and if I open the door (or heavily jostle the car) without disabling the locks the hazard lights start blinking and I have to re-do and re-shut-off the alarm to get it to quit. The only thing I don't have is an audible alarm. Did someone shut it off or unplug it at some point? How do I check for that? Might it just be broken?

I doubt that 1 in 50 of the alarm horns actually work. Many times they can be revived buy removing the cover and then tightening the center nut on the horn diaphragm. The alarm horn is mounted under the hood, high on the firewall, near the center of the car.The only thing I don't have is an audible alarm. Did someone shut it off or unplug it at some point? How do I check for that? Might it just be broken?
I thought I had a picture in my library but I can't seem to find it.

This is an absolutely excellent topic!
I'm not sure if this has been answered yet...but ...my 850s..both of them just squeal when you breach the alarm(lock the car with the remote..with me in it and then open the door from the inside...all I get is weird squealing)....the horn never is sounded...Lee was talking about tightening a nut.....Which nut..or how would I get to it?
The last time I was under the hood for an oil change..I tinkered with the bell a little....left it a little loose ...Is it supposed to be tight?
I attached an image ...hope it gives a better idea of what I did
Many many thanks in advance fellow Volvoers..I just invented that!

Is this in an attempt to transform the squealing to loud honking..lol...or is there something else I can/should do?Many times they can be revived buy removing the cover and then tightening the center nut on the horn diaphragm. Ok 1st, Glad to know im not the only one who has a car alarm that is a bit... *special* to say the least. And only goes off when someone INSIDE the car is trying to get OUT. lol
2nd, Try tightening what you loosend. then get in the car, lock it, and try to get out. haha.
ok I have to ask this.. Lee perhaps you can shed some light on this, if not I am going to the higher powers with this *volvo customer support* lol,
WHY is it that when someone gets in the car, locks the door. Than proceeds to open the door from the inside, the alarm goes off... BUT
when they lock the doors and try to open from the outside, nothing happens. To me it makes no sense. unless they are trying to catch someone who has just broken your window and opened the car from the inside. *lets just hope they dont hit the unlock door button or pull the plunger up lol* or did i just hit the nail on the head and not my thumb?
