Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.
Hi folks,
has anyone managed to track down a UK stockist for Mobil JWS 3309? I am reluctant to pay Stealership prices for the Volvo ATF and would be grateful if anyone out there has any info as I seem to be hitting a brick wall on this one.
Have you checked at a Toyota Dealership? While still painful, I think they are about half the price of Volvo for the same thing. The Mobil stuff is readily available in the US but I'm not sure about the UK.
Look for vehicles (e.g. some SAAB, Toyota, Nissan and Subaru's I believe) that use a version of (Aisin Warner) AW55/50 transmission, they will use the same ATF, and maybe you can find a reasonably priced fluid from another marque.
Also, Castrol makes a multi-vehicle ATF that is sold in the US that works, it doesn't have the name cachet of the others, but it works just fine. I would think that it's available in the EU. Their Transmax J, if you can find it, is supposed to be JWS3309 compatible.
And, last, Kroon ATF SP 2062; "has been specially developed for electronically controlled automatic transmissions of Aisin-Warner. These are used by various OEM's in their cars and vans. ATF SP 2062 is recommended for use if one of the following qualities or OEM partnumbers are specified: JWS 3309, Toyota & Lexus Type T-IV, Volvo 1161540, VAG G055025-A2 & GM 9986195."

Morris Multitrans Syn-T, sold with their fleet products, but T-IV spec'd and reasonably priced especially if you can find someone to share a small drum with.
Mobil 1 ATF is now JWS3309 compatible if it's available in the UK.
Many of these products seem to be much more expensive on your side of the pond which helps to explain why Volvo ATF is so expensive in the US--it's priced at EU market...
Remember, when checking compatibilities, that JWS3309 (the Aisin-Warner ATF specification) spec'd oils are backwards compatible with the old standards like Dexron, Mercon III and others--which are NOT upwards compatible with 3309. Toyota T-IV is JWS 3309 spec'd.
T5Paul: I just learned (wikipedia) that the P2 platform (with the 5-spd AW55/50 transmissions) was introduced in Europe a year earlier than here in the States. In 1999/2000, we still had the gen 1 V70, while the UK got the new P2's with the newer 5-speed transmissions--that required JWS 3309 spec (Toyota T-4) ATF.
You should need the newer ATF which, FWIW, is also backwards compatible with the older spec for pre-2000 (2001 in the US) vehicles.
I apologize for any confusion that I may have created.
(Edited to correct the tranny model #'s in the prior post and here, and note the model year differences between the EU and the US.)

Hi folks,
thanks very much for all the info, much appreciated.
In regards to what gearbox version i have, its the 5 speed geartronic. However my local Volvo specialist is looking into what oil the tranny needs.......some confusion here as its being a 2000 model so he is looking up the specs. Apparently he has had a similar problem recently with anoher car. Will post my findings, so long as it doesn't add any confusion. Volvo have a lot to answer for
thanks again for taking the time to respond and i will bear it all in mind depending on the news from my local garage
regards
Paul
Valvoline has something called MaxLife fully synthetic ATF. 5US$ a bottle. They say it meets Volvo JWS3309 specs. It's also blendable with conventional dino fluids so you can top off or just drain the pan like I did. It says It's specifically for cars over 75k with additives for dry seals and shuttering. I have posted the FAQ from the website.
I had my transmission fluid changed using Valvoline ATF+4 Synthetic fluid. All previous changes used conventional fluid. Will this cause a problem?
No. Switching to synthetic after using a conventional product will not cause a problem. Synthetic and conventional oils are 100% compatible.
#
What is the difference between DexronIII/Mercon and type "F" transmission fluid?
The Valvoline Type F transmission fluid is a high quality NON-friction modified fluid. Dexron III/Mercon includes friction modifiers in the fluid additive package.
#
Does Valvoline make a synthetic ATF?
Yes. Valvoline makes several synthetic ATF's. MaxLife Dexron/Mercon ATF, Mercon V ATF, ATF +4 and Dexron VI are all synthetic.
#
What is the shelf life of ATF?
The Valvoline Company does not have a documented shelf life exposure on finished motor oil or ATF. We would expect under optimal conditions that the product would be stable for an extended period of time. We recommend two things: 1) Make sure the rating meets or exceeds your requirements, and 2) Shake the container before use. If the fluid sets, sometimes the additives may settle in the bottom of the container.
#
Is ok to mix synthetic ATF with a conventional and/or synthetic blend ATF?
Yes. Synthetic and conventional fluids are 100% compatible to each other.
#
Is MaxLife ATF compatible with other brands of ATF?
MaxLife is a multi-purpose fluid compatible with many brands and manufacturer recommendations. Refer to the MaxLife label to determine whether MaxLife is compatible for your application.
#
I heard a rumor that using Dexron III will cause the clutch packs to swell and disintegrate? Is there any truth to this?
No. Dexron III ATF will not cause any damages to clutch packs.
#
Is MaxLife ATF an SP-111 fluid?
MaxLife Dex/Merc ATF is 100% compatible for use in SP-II and SP-III applications.
#
Does MaxLife ATF meet the spec for Volvos with a Geartronic Transmission?
Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc ATF will meet Volvo specifications that require the use of TIV or JWS3309 ATF.
#
Does MaxLife ATF meet Dexron VI specifications?
Yes. MaxLife Dex/Merc ATF meets the Dexron VI specifications.
#
Does GM recognize MaxLife ATF and is this an acceptable fluid to use in place of Dexron VI?
GM only recognizes their factory fill fluid for Dexron VI, but Valvoline meets and exceeds the performance requirements for the specification, and we stand behind the product 100% for this specification.
#
Can MaxLife ATF be mixed with Dexron VI or does the fluid need to be purged prior to installing MaxLIfe ATF?
Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc ATF is 100% compatible with the Dexron VI for mixing or flushing a system.
#
Is MaxLife ATF ok to use in applications requiring Mercon-V fluid?
Yes. MaxLife Dex/Merc ATF meets the Mercon V specifications.
I really don't understand why you would venture outside of Mobil 3309...Proper ATF is all around the same price... Consensus on this ATF(as mentioned in my post above) is that it is the best ATF available. This is the ATF used by the dealer(stealer)...It is spot on with the requirements...Trying to cut corners only costs you in the end....I bought mine from a store very much like Walmart yesterday...I wouldn't be surprised if they carried it, as a matter of fact the next time I go into Walmart I will look for it!!!!
Volvo ATF is rebadged Mobil 3309!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Save a few dollars to buy what the dealer uses for a fraction of the cost that the Stealer charges..... and skip Castrol and other imitations...and have a total peace of mind.
