240 In-tank pump

Post by LA48340 »

I am a newbie with a 1988 240 wagon. Getting ready to replace my in-tank pump since I read its probably due. I found the bolts around the tank. How does the fuel fill tube disconnect when the tank is lowered?
Is there a clamp or does it slide into a grommet or seal or the like.

thanks

Where did you read this? The in-tank pump is not a service item and, unless it is causing problems, should be left to work in peace.

To replace the in-tank unit you don't need to drop the tank. There is an inspection plate in the floor of the luggage compartment. Remove this and you will see the top of the tank and the pump.

I am getting some intermittant starting issues and the car has > 200K mi,
also there is no buzzing sound coming from the tank. I read some of the feedback on the IPD website from others who replaced their in-tank.
Checked the storage compartment under the hatch above the tank but didnt see an access..will look closer. thanks for the help.

The best way to listen for the in-tank pump is to remove the filler cap and put your ear as near as possible to the filler. Have someone else switch on the ignition. You should hear a buzz as the pump primes.

To test if the in-tank pump is operating without removing it from the tank: Locate the in-tank pump fuse (#4 on the '88). Remove the fuse with the car idling. You should be able to detect increased noise from the main pump and decreased vibration of the fuel tank itself.

I dont seem to hear a buzzing down the filler..I received a new pump today from IPD along with a bung tool. Is there supposed to be a visable access plate on the bottom of the storage shell? Mine has a heavy rubberized mat that is glued down. Do you cut the center out for access? thanks.

On the estate (wagon) the fuel tank is mounted to the side. In the luggage area there is a wooden floor at the side. Lift that and you will see the access panel to the top of the tank.

Thank you for the tip..I have a manual on order. I was ready to cut a hole in the bottom of the storage tub. Did find one the wires on the pump broken at the solder joint..the removed pump did still run when hooked up to a power supply. Now to find my flame trap??

You are welcome. Thank you for the update. If the old pump is still working and you have used the new one keep the old as a spare. If you keep the car long enough you may need it. :)

For the flame trap I have started a new thread as it isn't related to this one.
