1999 S80 T6 Emission code D what does shut off valve do?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

1999 S80 T6 Emission code D what does shut off valve do?

Post by dcarlson12 »

I have attached two files showing the parts diagram and parts list.
Does anyone know how or what the shut off valve works/does?
Occasionally I smell gas after driving the car into our garage and shutting it off.
I also have the ECM-430D trouble code i.e. slow leak in evaporative system. The code only recently appeared. The smell of gas was noticeable before. i.e I think the issues are two separate problems.
I see an air filter at the end of the large hose coming from/going to the charcoal canister via the shut off valve. What does this filter do?

How does one access the end of the large hose? Is it attached to the fuel filler system?

And how does one access the shut-off valve assembly to check to see if the hose perhaps has a split/hole in it which might cause the gas smell and might also be causing the slow leak code?

Thks.

The EGR System is installed between the exhaust and intake manifolds. Under certain conditions the valve opens, allowing exhaust to enter the air intake. Since exhaust really doesn’t burn or combust, the air/fuel charge is diluted which reduces combustion chamber temperatures and reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) levels.

As you have posted diagrams from VADIS I assume you have it or have access to it.

Go to the engine page for your car.
Click on "Repair and installation instructions".
Click on "Removal, replacement and installation".
Click on "23 Fuel system".
Click on "Fuel tank, fuel lines and evaporative system".
Click on "Replacing the shut off valve for the carbon filter container".

Bill:
Thanks for your reply but the valve to which I am referring relates to the evaporative vapour capture system. The VADIS shows two systems. i.e. one with the valve and one without it. I think perhaps the one using the valve closes the valve during a test to see if there are leaks in the system. I guess such a test is not run for systems without the valve. Also perhaps the valve is open when the fumes are being sucked to the engine i.e. to allow fresh air into the charcoal container as fumes are being sucked out?
