'95 960 5- door Fuel Injectors Open

Post by KirbyBG »

A week ago, car ran rough (loss of power, etc) and check engine light came on. I restarted the car and it ran fine, took it into the dealership for diagnostic and they told me ALL the fuel injectors are in the open position and not closing.

They want to sell me all new fuel injectors, however I'm finding it hard to believe that all 6 injectors would exhibit the same problem at the same time. Another mechanic told me it could be wiring problem which would make more sense.

I can afford to replace the fuel injectors, if replacing them can fix the problem. I'm not sure it will.

About six weeks ago, car exhibited the same symptoms (error code 1-1-3) and the dealership told me it was the oxygen sensor which was replaced. The car ran okay until last week when it exhibited the same brief symptoms. They cleared up when car was restarted.

Car seems to be running okay and I don't notice any problems (other than the check engine light). Should I continue to drive it while I try to get it fixed? There are few garages that work on this car in my area. (arkansas)

There are 130,000 miles on this 5-door. Engine was rebuilt about 6K miles ago.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

I tend to agree with the other mechanic. It is unusual that all of the injectors would develop the same fault which requires replacing them all. A wiring problem could affect all six.

Unfortunately the 960 had different fuel systems in different years so, before going too deeply into this I have one question - does your vehicle have the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) unit mounted on the left strut turret or is it accessed using a reader from a data link connector inside the passenger compartment? Late 1995 cars would be 1996 models with the later OBD11.

If you need to see the early type of OBD there is a thread in the announcements at the top of the forum detailing how to use it.

The OBD is located under the hood on the left side. It is one of the older style OBD's and the code it is giving me is 1-1-3. The OBD will not clear.

I can't imagine that all 6 injectors would malfunction in the same way either. I am driving it (light use) and the engine seems to be running okay.

As in past occasions with this problem, I restart the car and the symptoms clear up.

BTW, the dealership's mechanic did say the car's computer system was not the problem.

Thanks for the response.

The codes should clear once you have read them. This attachment shows how. I apologize if this is how you are doing it.

You must check for faukt codes again, going through them all if there is more than one before erasing them.

The reason for asking the location of the OBD was to determine which injector system is on the car.

Code 1-1-3 does relate to the injectors but it can also be set by the heated oxygen sensor, which has been replaced, and the Mass AirFlow (MAF) sensor. You can clean this using a proprietary MAF cleaner from any parts store. You can also check the injectors, in situ, using an ohmmeter. Remove the multi-plug from the injector and test across the terminals. Resistance should be 16 ohms. That test will determine if any of the injectors is faulty.

If, after these checks, the fault persists you can go on to this more technical check.

On your car the injectors are in two groups. Group 1 is injectors 1, 2 & 4 and group 2 is injectors 3, 5 & 6. A wiring fault should only affect one group unless it was the ECU at fault - ruled out by the dealer. As your engine is running on all six cylinders my diagnostic check list advises checking the 55 pin connector in the central relay unit for loose connections and oxidation of the pins.

The codes are now cleared. The dealership was the one that told me the codes would not clear.

Thanks. Will try your suggestions and let you know.
