Do I have to drop the tank to replace the pump?

No. There is an inspection hatch under the floorcovering.

I have never drained the tank to do this, just run it a little lower than I normally do. The nut on the top of the unit can usually be taken off without the special tool. I use a piece of wood as a drift and tap gently with a hammer until it moves. Once it does move it is very easy to get it off.
