I'm looking to flush the transmission soon and did some additional research because Mobile 3309 is a pain to get and expensive, $6+ a quart plus $30 shipping per case.
Looking at the spec sheets for Mobile 1 and Castro Import Muti Vechile they both meet JWS3309 specs.

I know general consensus on the forums is 3309, but is that just because originally Mobile 3309 was the only choose.

The NEW (make sure you buy the right one) Mobil 1 (and no E on Mobil) is 3309 compliant.
I have never seen a Castrol bottle so I can't comment on it

Hello, After learning about the "JWS 3309" specification I observed a long lag for the petroleum blenders and bottlers to update a product, its bottle and to get the word out to bulk delivery services. 1) Communications with Royal Purple, Porter, TX ground to a halt when I alerted them to the existance of 3309. One year later their trans fluid product (Max-ATF, I think) is in a bottle sporting a "meets 3309" claim. 2) Mobil synthetic ATF which is 3309 compatible is said to be in a different bottle. I haven't seen it myself note: Original Mobil 3309 is not synthetic. 3) The bulk supplier to a well established transmission shop near me didn't know anything about this 8-9 YEAR OLD PRODUCT. What's the big deal with these experts?
In February this year I had a local transmission shop flush my '01 V70 T5 with their machine and fill with Mobil ! Multi Vehicle. I checked the label to make sure it was 3309 compliant. After having driven my car for five years and done multiple flushes myself it was obvious to me that "compliant" did not mean "equal to". My transmission was sluggish, the fluid turned brown within a week. I flushed out the offending fluid and refilled with Mobil 3309. Back to normal.
Its true that, for some, Mobil 3309 is a PITA to obtain. I pay $75 a case to have it delivered to my porch. For some its a PITA to maintain a vehicle properly. Use what you will, I will never use a "multi vehicle" grade of transmission fluid in my vehicle again.

For the Canadians like myself... This store has the...Mobil ATF 3309...
Flush your tranny right/or drain it and refill ...drive and drain..repeat the process 4 or so times through the span of 2-4 weeks or so and you'll be pleasantly surprised with the smoothness of your old ...but reconditioned transmission.
I can't wait to try this!!!!!---I will Re-post as soon as I have done so!!!!

And hey folks come on..you know the saying a stitch in time saves nine...
Take care of your car..especially motor / transmission oil..or be prepared to fork out huge amounts of money reaping what you've sowed!!!!
That's what this forum is for ...to SAVE you money...and learn a thing or two!

I second the motion by "850 Turbo1". 3-months ago I looked into this, Volvo dealership wanted >$700.00 to flush/refill the trans in my 2004 S60 2.4 non-turbo. After searching around this forum and others, I bought a case (12-qts) of Toyota T-IV from the local toyota dealer for $5.04/qt, and flushed it myself by:
- Disconnecting the upper trans-cooler line from the radiator.
- Connecting a see-thru hose to the radiator-side, and then to a 1-gallon container (note on other models the in/out lines from the radiator may be reversed).
- Starting engine and letting it pump about 2 quarts out.
- Replace the 2 quarts thru dipstick tube.
- Repeating out-in process, outgoing trans fluid started to become clear/red after about 10 quarts. I did another quart and kept last quart to top-off later.
-Put everything back where it came from, let it idle/warm up for 15 minutes, ran it thru all gears, then checked ATF fluid level and topped off.
That was ~3 months ago, it seems to be performing just fine. Had 85K miles on it, now have 92K. Old fluid had never been changed (Volvo says not req'd), but it was jet black. I almost bought the kit from IPD, but I had a piece of clear hose, and the cooler line to the radiator came out easy and I didn't need a new o-ring. I've checked a few times and its not leaking anywhere. ~$65.00 vs. $700. Ka-ching!
Hope this helps.... I have pictures, may post if I have time to figure out how.
