Re: Stalling problem - 94 850 turbo
Either happens. Both of mine just up and died without warning, and cleaning made no difference. It should be able to run in limp mode though, which is puzzling, so unless you find any loose hoses, I wonder if you have a fuel delivery problem or a bad pump relay. Have you checked the fuel pressure at the rail?

I couldn't find any leaks, and I looked as carefully as I could, including doing a lot of checking by feel on hoses I could not see.
How do I check the fuel pressure? Never done that before. I can hear the fuel pump running before I turn the key, but that doesn't mean that the relay may not be crapping out shortly after.

Pull the fuel pump relay (103) - you need to pull the fuse box cover to get to it - and use a jumper wire or a paper clip to jumper the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87 on the relay. If the car runs OK in that mode the relay is bad and you can either repair it or replace it. The fuel pump relays, when they begin to fail, get temperature sensitive and this is the time of year where we see many of them crap out.

Pulled the relay and jumped it as you described; no change, still idles really badly with MAF connected and better (but not great) with MAF disconnected. I think that in "limp mode" I would be able to drive the car a short distance if necessary, it would just need some careful attention to the throttle.
It sounds to me like the likely culprit is the MAF; or am I missing something?

That's probably it then - I'd replace it with an OEM one, I know these cars are very picky about that particular sensor if you get an aftermarket one from an auto parts store or something.

I'm a newbie and am trying to work on my s80 with help from others, so forgive me if I don't have all the info firsthand. A mechanic literally dropped into my front yard five minutes after I'd received the fuel filter yesterday and nicely checked my fuses, checked the pressure coming from the schrader valve, replaced the filter...still no pressure afterwards and the car still won't start, though it acts like it wants to, obviously is a fuel delivery problem. You can hear the fuel pump buzzing when the key is at position II also. He didn't have a gauge but guessed the pressure to be about 4-5 psi. I've found a pump though my brother is having to bring it to me from 160 miles away and we are going to try to install it either tonight or tomorrow and I am searching the boards trying to find the info I need on gaining access to the tank....but I ran across this post and wonder if I should check the relay first. So, if anyone could tell me if this would be the same method to check the s80 fuel pump relay, I would deeply appreciate it. My brother is trying to rescue his older sis here but he gets a little impatient and it's very cold AND growing darker here by the minute. I'd love to be able to tell him to turn back around, return the part, and go home where it's nice and cozy. Plus, I'd be $300 richer again.Ozark Lee wrote:Pull the fuel pump relay (103) - you need to pull the fuse box cover to get to it - and use a jumper wire or a paper clip to jumper the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87 on the relay. P.S. He has changed the plan and decided to come in the a.m. so it still won't be too late if someone wants to respond to my query!

Wow, I can't find ANYTHING about that on an S80 anywhere. I have an S70, so I'm entirely guessing here.
From what I can find. Under your dash there's a fusebox. Look for a big blocky relay, #28. You'll want to stick a jumper between pins #1 and #3 here.

In addition, check fuse #33. Better to start with the simpler things like that first.
Sorry I can't be of more help! You can try reposting this in the S80 section of this site, Volvospeed, and Brickboard as well; hopefully you'll get some responses from people that know more there!

Thank you, I am slowly figuring out how this board is setup - so much information! I am glad it's not just me who cannot find a lot of information on this topic with the S80. I will try jumping the relay tomorrow as well as check out the sites you mentioned. Thank you again!

jablackburn: I found this on the brickboard site, thanks so much for giving me a few more places to check:
S80s have no FPR S80

I checked with my dealer, and the S80s don't have a fuel pump relay. The fuel pump and sender are packaged into one unit. So, if you turn the key to position II and do not heare the pump prime the system, you probably need a new pump.
I don't know where the access is to the pump on your model. Unless you have AWD, you should not have to drop the tank. Check under the carpeting behind the rear seat for access panels.
Replace the filter at the same time.
