94-95 960 Sedan

Post by Kappy5003 »

Hi All

Currently I own a 96 850 S Wagon with about 250,000 km on the clock give or take 15k, due to speedo issue.

I have the opportunity to obtain a 1994, 95 registered 960 sedan, with approx 150,000km on the clock.

I was wondering if there are any known nasty little traits that the 960 possess.

Also I tow a largish tandam axle trailer from time to time and I was wondering if anyway knows how the 960 measures up when towing at highway speeds etc, as the 850 really struggles in the towing dept.

The 960 seems to be a nice car and a tad more luxurious that my 850.

Cheers

From 1992 to 1995 the 960 was fitted with the B6304F engine, some of which had a porous block causing coolant leakage. I had one of the first of the 960s which topped 120,000 miles with no sign of this problem. My friendly Volvo man has never seen one with this, but it is a recorded fault with a minority of cars. With the mileage (or is it kilometreage?) on the car you are considering it should have shown itself by now. Look closely at the block for signs of repairs although these didn't cure the problem, just moved it somewhere else.

I towed a twin axle caravan with mine and never had any problems. The self adjusting rear suspension made for a very stable ride. One thing I did notice, it seemed to do a lot of gear changing on motorways. Again, a word with my friendly Volvo man put my mind at ease. The box is electronic and can 'think' faster than a human. Any slight increase in revs, coupled with the extra weight, will induce it to drop a gear. This is normal.

One thing that really pleased me was fuel consumption. It dropped by the massive amount of 1mpg with the 'van on the back.

Thanks Bill

The engine was subject of a timing belt breaking which produced a hole in one of the pistons.

The heads been off, piston repaired, new timing belt and thoroughly checked out, it belongs to a close friend who is mechanic and did all the work himself.

He has now acquired a S90 and wants to moved the 960.

Both are nice looking vehicles.

Please about the towing aspect.

Cheers
Wayne

Perth - just up the road and I am looking for a 960. Scotland uses miles, not kilometres, so it must be Australia.

If it had been over here you would have had competition. Go for it, especially if it has been well looked after.
