2002 XC-70, 120k miles
- headlights no longer work
- parking lights on
- started as intermittent, now all the time
- used dashboard switch did not fix
- does not seem to be ignition switch; jiggling key does not help
- system display does not read "BULB FAILURE DIPPED BEAM"
Could the shunt described in "P2 V70 & S60 headlight fix" be the problem without this system message?
Relay?

I have had this same issue with my 2002 xc 70. I traced mine down to the terminal connection at the back of the light. The connection gets hot on the spade terminal and starts to burn and corrodes the connection causing high resistance.Check for hard or crispy wire insulator at the back of the headlight. You may need to cut the old wires off and make a new pig tail going to the light terminals.Make sure you use good terminals and heat shrink tubing to cover your repair to avoid corrosion to your new connections.

Thanks for the tip csmith1.
I tried FUBAR's "P2 V70 & S60 headlight fix" last weekend and my CEM looked exactly like his pics.
Cleaned the CEM socket, terminals on the headlight resistor and replaced the resistor; headlights now function. (I've since bought new for $6.50)
Brilliant fix, FUBAR!

Hello, Hey transporter, I'm brand new to this board and relatively handy with cars. What's a CEM? Also, to find Fubar's post which you used do I enter it into the "searchbox" in the upper right? Thanks, George ps I bought a spare H7 plug(female recepticle) when I saw how very brittle the original plastic is. Suggestion: find them EARLY for $2.40 or pay $13.00 for one in a hurry. I didn't make those numbers up. g
