RE: SC816 radio

Post by andymwhitehead »

Hi just joined this website. Have owned 3 Volvo's now. 2 850's and now just got a 1998 V70 GLT. When I got it it had a list of things needing repair. One being radio. The lights on buttons and LCD were blown. Radio is apart and have got bulbs etc to do these fixes. However, in addition the volume/fader acting up on drivers side front speaker. Need a new Alps volume potentiometer I believe. Does anyone know where to get replacement Alps potentiometers to fix this? Or does anyone have an old 816 junk radio with one in they want to sell? I have paypal account

Welcome to MVS,

I am a bit surprised that you are having fader trouble with a SC816, they are normally pretty good except for the big bass bump at around 100 Hz. Have you tried spraying some contact cleaner into the fader? If you can find it one of the better contact cleaners is called Cramolin but it is hard to find. If you have an electronics parts wholesaler nearby they might have it or be able to get it.

The SC810s were notorious for the fader problems but they were largely cured from the SC813 series and on.

Hi Lee,

Thanks for reply. I think the volume control / fader is acting up but may be front drivers side speaker? When I pull out volume button to adjust balance/fade left to right you can hear good quality sound in problem speaker (very low volume compared to right side (even when adjusted for equal balance left to right - Rear speakers appear to be balance when front speakers are not) This led me to believe speaker ok but volume being sent to it not correct? The volume in front driver speaker only works when I pull volume control out to adjust. When I press back in volume on front left speaker zero. Where do I spray the cleaner? Volume controller (Alps controller - blue) seems completely sealed. No access for cleaner? Ideas?
