98 S70 trouble codes/engine cooling

Post by martz010185 »

My 98 S70 non-turbo has 204,000 miles on it. My CEL came on and I read the codes, and I got P0116 for engine coolant temp. The symptoms are the same as an issue I had four years ago - the CEL came on, the engine wouldn't get up to temp, no heat from the vents, and hard starting on really cold mornings. My mechanic replaced the thermostat and ECT sensor and fixed the problem. I want to do the work myself this time, but on FCP Groton they sell three different ones, for 87, 90 and 92 degrees. How do I know which one to buy? How can I know that the ECT sensor for sure has gone bad?

Thanks for any help!

Get the OEM one - I believe it's the 90 degree one. Standard operating procedure is to replace both, i just did them both on mine. 4 years seems a bit short for a thermostat, but I'd go ahead and replace them both if you're getting a bad code. I had trouble finding the ECT online for my 98 - let me know if you can't find it and I can dig up the packing slip with the part number for you.

A learning experience is one of those things that says, "You know that thing you just did? Don't do that."
