Turbo Oil Leak *pic*

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Turbo Oil Leak *pic*

Post by eM3RgE »

I've been trying to find this leak that I am having. So far I had changed the transmission filter, and thought the leak might be coming from there. The power steering reservoir was my next guess so I tighten the hose, still keep dripping... so I assumed it must be the steering rack. So I decided to put the car on a lift again and patiently wait for the leak to drip. I surely didn't come from the steering rack but from the transmission shaft where the bearing was. I said to myself I'll get a mechanic to look at it, and he said that it is coming from the turbo oil line. So far all my fluids are right on the mark, and the car is running fine with no codes. This leak is just annoying me. Is it really from the turbo? Or could it be from the transmission? How hard is it to fix these? Anybody here have had these issues before? I have been using this site as a great source, thanks so much for all the helpful information.

That looks like red fluid to me. If it is red, it's not from the turbo line because the oil would be black or brown - it would have to be transmission or power steering fluid. Could it be leaking out of the seal at the transmission and migrating down the shaft to where it drips off? If it's a bad transmision seal, you have to remove the shaft, pull the seal out and tap a new one in, then put the shaft back in.

That's exactly what I thought. How hard is it to remove the shaft and change the seal? The leak is coming from exactly where that drop is. Do you have any illustrations on the parts (seal) that are on here? Thanks

This page shows how to remove the shaft on the left side: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=15872

The right side is the same, except you have to remove the two bolts holding the intermediate bearing. You can skip some of the steps if you are just pulling the shaft out. Once you get the axle out, you need a special tool (available at your local auto parts store) to pull out the old seal. You can tap the new one in with a large socket or a special tool. Make sure you don't deform it. If I were going to do all that work, I'd install a new shaft and hub while I had it apart, but that's just me. :D

You need to move back to Vegas! I will try that and hopefully that will solve it. BTW do you happen to know a good Volvo shop around here, just incase this happen to be out of my league. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

I used Volvo of Las Vegas, the dealership on West Sahara. Their work was OK, but the prices are high, as they are with any Volvo dealership. They seemed to be honest. As a matter of fact, I paid them to fix a turbo oil return line leak that I had. It was a real turbo oil line leak and the oil was brown, not red. The part is cheap (just a seal) - the cost is in the labor to take the line apart and put the new seal in. It hasn't leaked since. This was before I started doing my own work, of course. :D

Hi everyone,

Here is my problem:

My 850 T5 runs great except for an oil leak that leaks all over the back of the engine and has a very strong oil burning smell when stopping on exit ramps after freeway driving. After a little research on this forum I replaced the turbo oil line gasket and o ring, but the oil burning smell is still there so I'm guessing its a different issue. While changing the oil return line, I noticed quite a bit of oil on the bottom of the turbo, but I doubt its getting from there to the exhaust. I've also noticed some oil around the valve cover that I'm thinking could be dripping and burning on the manifold - doesn't look like its coming out the oil fill hole.

Some one gave me this answer and I'm 95% sure he's right:
There will be no more smell after running it with the turbo return tube replaced. It took a while to get the smell to go away, but that fixed it.

Tonight I took off the plastic cover that hides the spark plugs, and found oil in all the indentations in the head. After a little searching, I also found a hose that is connected to the passenger side of the intake manifold that had rotted off (5/16 od and 1/8id). Does this hose have anything to do with the PCV system? I never noticed any oil coming from the oil filler cap, just a little around where it meets the valve cover. I'll see what happens when I run it for a while now that that hose is re-connected (whatever its for?).

Now I would love to order the parts and get started repairing it but I have no idea what the parts I need are. If anyone would be so kind as to tell me what parts I will need to tackle this job I would be very grateful....the smell is KILLING MEEE!!
