94 850 - Just purchased and already fixing up

Post by cowboysvolvofan »

Hi everyone. I just bought my 850 in October and it has a few problems. First on the agenda was the temperature not staying consistent, which led to the heater not heating very well. My first step was to change the thermostat (as it is usually the cheapest route) and it worked. It runs with the temp. gauage in the middle and the heat is HOT.

I've loved this site ever since I discovered it. You all have so much valuable information. Thank you!

I'm very mechanically inclined as I grew up working in a junk yard and selling cars, but very electronically declined, if that makes sense! I've been reading some old posts about the SRS light being on. This light has been on since I bought it and on a series of older posts, someone suggested shorting the battery terminals. Does anyone know if this is the first route to take?

Also, this is probably going to get a few laughs, but "reading and clearing codes." I have absolutely no idea how to accomplish this. Can someone help?

Thanks for any suggestions, and sorry about the long post! :P

Glad to know you got your thermostat fixed already, everyone seems to be having problems with the darn things this winter, myself included.

Read the SRS codes and it should tell you where to begin with that system.

Here's how to read the codes on a 94:

Read them from all ports and post back, and everyone will give you a better idea of where to start.

Thanks a lot, and for getting back right away.

Being that it's 6 degrees and snowing today (I don't have a garage), I will check it out this weekend.

I will repost when I get some codes. Thanks a million again!

The SRS codes are via the method in the above post however the fly-wire needs to be plugged into port B-5 in the diagnostic center. Port A-2 will give engine codes only.

Seach out the 850 repair manual on this site.

It will help answer some of those questions.

Ok. I got to looking at codes today, and the engine is good. I just have to put it in B5 to get SRS codes. I also have to put it somewhere to get the ABS codes.

I'll let you know what happens soon. Expecting highs in the single digits tomorrow and Thursday. :x
