Hi
Currently a 94 940 turbo wagon owner (very happy). purusing through the local dealer lot and found a 1999 V70 R AWD with third seat, upgraded stereo/cd, leather/suede seats, roof rack (with bars), DSTC, etc. I made the mistake of driving it and fell quite heavily for it. It has 51000 miles and is a certified used vechile until 3/05 or 100k. Consumer reports it is a car to avoid. Any insight on the reliability of this car for the lonh haul? They are asking $ 27,900, which is too high. Any anysight on a fair/good price for the car.
Thanks

$ 27,900
That's a bundle.
The bevel gears on those AWDs are prone to failure when one wheel gets even a tiny bit smaller or bigger than the other 3. Remember, that model is Volvo's first shot at AWD. Audi, by comparison, has been at it for 20 years, and they have their bugs worked out.
I'd stay away from 1st generation Volvo, or any manufacturer's, AWD.

thats way too much money for that car!!! i bought a 99 v70r awd for 34g's and it only had 30.000 miles on it and a clean record. make sure they put four NEW MATCHING tires on it before you buy it.

I don't think Volvo used the same system in their 1st gen. AWD that Audi ever used. How do I know? I don't, but from not hearing about Audi AWD bevel gear problems in those same years (1998-2001), I'm making an educated guess.
