I wasn't aware the service light required the Volvo scan tool to reset, I thought a normal OBD II scanner would work.

The service light cannot be reset with a standard OBD-II scanner on the '96 and on models. You can use a Draper reset tool or VOL-FCR software with a VAG-COM OBD-II cable to do it. Otherwise it is a trip to a shop that has a Volvo scan tool or, has been suggested, remove the lamp and stomp on it like a bug to make sure that it can never come back.

Hi Lee.

Thank you for the information.
If I have those two (and a PC too), am I going to be able to read, scan and reset all the data from my car?

Thanks.

The Draper reset tool only deals with the service light and the SRS light. It reads no codes at all but it will turn off the lights. The only place I have found to buy the Draper is through eBay and it comes from England. The last time I looked it cost around $80 USD.

The VOL-FCR software along with the VAG-COM cable can deal with many of the proprietary Volvo systems, it will reset the service light, it will reset the SRS light but it will not read engine codes on a Motronic 4.3 system. I understand that it will read engine codes on a Motronic 4.4 but I don't have a car that has that system. On my '96 850 it will not read climate unit codes but it may on other cars.

I have Version 1.3 of VOL-FCR which requires the use of an actual serial cable, I think there are later versions that work with USB cables and have enhanced features.

This one you posted will not, because it's usb to obdII.You need serial db9 to obdII vag-com kkl cable.

Or..original vol-fcr cable:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/350127-V ... 0004r34051

I'm waiting for Vol-fcr cable to arrive. My uncle bought it from e-bay for 24$ and sent it to me.I was unable to buy it because in Serbia we don't have paypall.

When i try it out i will confirm is it working or not.

I purchased the draper tool for my 96 850 and it does not perform as directed in the enclosed instructions. The green light comes on as soon as I plug the draper tool into the port on the console. Any ideas? The green light never blinks or goes out, even with the ignition on and back off.

Thanks,
