Hi,
I had a problem with the rack leaking that finally we had to have fixed--too big a leak. The local guy who fixed it seemed to do a good job, but I wondered if he put the right fluid in, and then the steering started to be uneven again. Fluid levels are fine though so no leak. I asked him if he put the ATF in and he said yeah he puts in fluids to specs, but really he's not used to working on Volvos I don't think. So he thinks it is a bad pump...I'm wondering if I ought to swap out the fluid and see if it works better. I found a post by DaMoose who said the following and while I think the problem persists beyond morning sickness it makes me wonder:
[quote]Does Volvo have a morning sickness problem?
Is your problem just the first thing in the morning or does it happen though the day?
On some rack and pinion cars there is a problem in the valve of the rack. The disks in the valve that control how much help is needed with turning have a sticky problem when cold. This problem goes away in just a few minutes after the first start up of the day. I have experienced it on GM cars of the late 80

check the unversal joint b/t the rack and steering column, sometimes they wear and will bind.
We just had the ball joints redone recently. Is that like the Ujoint? Could that fix be the problem? We had that done at a very experiened Volvo shop so it should be good.Anonymous wrote:check the unversal joint b/t the rack and steering column, sometimes they wear and will bind.
