xc70 2002 transmission

Post by loisvolvo »

my transmission revs high and then shifts with a clunk. it seems to happen in all gears while under light acceleration. fluid is at the appropriate level but slightly brown... no burned smell. Can a dealer diagnose the problem with a computer?
Thanks

Lots of discussion about symptoms like yours on this forum.

A distillation:

Aisin-Warner transmissions in early P2 cars (like yours and mine) are a poor design. Slippage can be caused by tired transmission fluid and the Stop/Neutral function (trans slides into Neutral at a full stop, clunks into gear on acceleration). Possible mitigating actions include having your trans flushed (you can DIY) and refilled every 30,000 miles with a JWS 3309 fluid ONLY and having the dealership turn off the Stop/Neutral function. If your transmission improves as a result, Congrats! If not, a trans costs about $4,000.

I believe the stop/neutral transmission programming was only on 2001 models here in the US. I might be wrong, but best bet is to call your Volvo dealer or a local sophisticated indie shop who has the tools to do this software upgrade.

Whatever the case, Steely's advice is sound. Search the forum here for more background on transmissions than you can read in a day.

Hello loisvolvo, FYI: The TCM download which cured my woes (like yours and most other posters' too) cost $60 at "my" Volvo dealer. Meanwhile: Change your transmission fluid ASAP. You should do searches on the subject of bevel gear fluid maintenance too. Happy New Year! ! Kira
