The idler pulley's bearings went on my brother's car & so did the timing belt. compression was low on cylinder # 1 so I took the head off. The valves look good except for two dinks on the #1 piston. To be on the safe side I sent the head to a machine shop. (Didn't want to chance it)
My question is, do I need the camshaft tool to reinstall the head? The exhaust cam doesnt seem to have one of those slots in the back to insert the tool. Seems to be the adjustable/variable cam.
Also, do I need to remove the starter to keep crankshaft from moving?

Keep the starter in - it is not hooked to the crank while off.
On a VVT engine you can spin the cam an extra 90 degrees with the belt before removal to take off the oil pressure in the VVT. As yours is off I would just make sure the VVT am has no oil pressure and line up the marks correctly. You should no need a tool . As I am not an expert on the 40 series here is what Volvo says - hope it helps. Hope its a 1.9T
