240 1986 heater blower squawks at me!

Post by Jeff1964 »

Okay, it is cold here, and I need to run the heater- however I get squawking from somewhere in the blower assembly. When I run the heater on the highest velocity, the squawking goes away and I can then return to level 2 and it is fine. Seems that the heater motor itself is okay. Is there someplace that needs a shot of silicon spray? Is the motor directly attached to the impellers? This happens in the summer as well when we are running the A/C.

thanks and Merry Christmas,

Jeff

The motor is attached to the impellers.

Unfortunately, on the 240 getting to the motor is a major job, even to give the bearings a squirt of silicone based oil.

This link will take you to a site that deals with this problem. Make sure you also read the 'Chainsaw Method'.

Hi Bill-

I visited the page you mentioned and had seen it before but did not want to take the plunge..

Well on Christmas Eve I jumped in the deep end for about a half hour and started the tear down and on Christmas Day (after the presents) for another couple of hours I got to taking the motor out. The bushings were fine- just dry as a bone. I smeared a bunch of bearing grease on them and squirted some silicone lube and paraffin-based bicycle chain lube as well. Remounted the motor and tested it- no more squawking!

Saturday morning, 28 degrees in the garage, and four hours later everything was back together. My hands were thawing out around dinnertime. Next time I'm using a heater!

Now my flapper controls don't work because I routed the tubes wrong and plugged the left vacuum tube into the top left flapper control. Somehow I lost that tube in the process.. But we'll sort that out soon- at least its quiet when the blower is on.

Thanks for the tip

Happy New Year!

Jeff
