Resetting Service light

Post by pemanuel »

Hi!
I have a 1997 Volvo model 850 and am having trouble finding a service station that knows how to turn the "service" light off. Talked to a dealer and their cost (to my mind) exhorbitant. Can any one tell me how to turn it off, after I have had the car serviced? Would appreciate the help.

I Too would like an answer to this question as well. Can anyone help us out with a suggestion? There has to be a tool or something that some of you volvo owners know about?

There is indeed a tool for 97-98 850 and S70 models, but I don't really see the point. I just ignore mine.

Now, I'm not sure about the 96 960, but I do know that with earlier generation 850's and 99-2000 models, the procedure was to hold down the odometer reset button while turning the key to the II position, wait for the service light to flash, and then it will be reset for the next 5000 miles or whatever. For whatever reason, they decided to make the 97 and 98 models a dealer-only feature.

For your 850, search for a "Draper Reset Tool" on ebay. Those are the only things that I've heard of that works aside from the actual Volvo scan tool that dealers/mechanics have.

I plan to just pull out the stupid service bulb when I go behind my dash to replace my evaporator this summer. For now, I use it as an indicator of when the car is warmed up enough to get my foot into the turbo.
