Well, for those of you who are interested in this perplexing little mystery, I have some answsers. First and foremost it is not the dreaded wheel bearing as I thought but neverthless I have a new one in my car at the great expense of finding this out.
Four hundered and fifty $$$ dollars later my noise is still there, so much for taking it to the dealer. The mechanic was as clue-less as yours truly. We drove the car, heard the same noise and both agreed that in all likelihood it was wheel bearing but ofcourse NO way of knowing 100%.
So, now that I have a new un-needed wheel bearing the search goes on. I now suspect its my Michelin X tires??? Any ideas???
Lesson learned? Unless one is as close as possible to 100% sure of the problem don't throw any money at it untill you have tried any and all cheaper tests. I probably should have mounted some other tires first...drats!!!
Well, so much from the Great Northwest

ok, im glad im not crazy. I have the same issue with my s60 @ 70k miles. I hear a definite humming on occasion when im on the highwaydoing 65+, and especially when when the wheel is slightly turned to either direction. Brought it to the dealer today, and they took it out for a spin, but they didnt hear it, my brother took it out yesterday, didnt hear anything as well. Tech thought it might be the bearing or bushings or whatever, but they said they didnt find the problem. the car has new tires less than a a year old, but I dont know how that would add to the problem. anyone else have an idea?

Same problem here. 2004 S60 with 17,500 miles. Dealer says it is the tires, but I don't think it is. Anyone else with any help/answers?

Does this noise comes when the car is warm or cold? My old car had a similar noise which was coming from the front ball joints.

I get this sound from my 01 s60 2.4t at low speeds, but tech at locat volvo can't dup the mystery continues

Perhaps totally irrelevant but I thought I'd let you know anyway.
I have a similar symptom on my '96 850. A whining noise mainly at low speeds.
After searching for a long time, I discovered it is the radio antenna making noise in the drive wind.

S60-D5..
my 2003 S60 40k has similar noises especially when i am cruising.main stealers couldnt hear anything even after 3 attempts.i was getting to think i am paranoid abit but when one day i put the car on ramps i decided to spray the all the linkages and bits with grease..sine that day i have not heard a sound..[/u][/b]
I continue to battle this frustrating problem. I read from another post that it could possibly be the rubber bushing at the top of the MacPherson Strut. Thank you for this revealing insight...good call!!!
This is the best advice yet and makes complete sense since I have all but eliminated the drive train. I turned the engine off while going about 60 mph (careful not to lock the ignition switch or the stearing will also lock up). Anyway, the noise persists leaving me with more questions.
This suggestion came from a Volvo owner who experienced the problem on his previous car. I do believe it is a more of a resonating sound rather than a rotating sound like a bearing, so we're on the right track for this one. I will give it a try and see where we go from here.
Oh, by the way, I changed tires(new Goodyear Assurance) no change, noise still there.
I have to say overall, I have been disapointed with this car. It has way too many little quirks for a near luxury car and especially given the price.
This is my second Volvo in a 20 year period and I was equally disapointed with my former 240 ( what a box that was). I switched over to SAAB years ago and should have stayed with that car. I have many fond memories of my SABB's.
Also one more note about Swedish engineers, I have this urge to line them up in a row and just slap them silly, who designs a car without a trunk release from inside the car. I have to be sure all my doors are first unlocked before the trunk will open using the hand release at the trunk...crazy!!! Also, to open all doors from iside I first have to close them using the button...what is that all about? silly security engineering.
Next car...totally different thing I'm afraid. Not sure what direction to go yet. I will be doing a lot of research and asking a lot of questions about customer support etc. Anyway, sorry to rant on just a little pissed.

Why would anyone want to open the trunk from inside the car?
All the doors don't have to be unlocked, you can unlock and pop the trunk via the remote, as soon as you close it , it locks and alarms again.
NOTE: it's soooooo easy to put ya keys in the trunk..and close it..locking ya keys inside!
Surely to open all the doors from the inside..you must have already got inside..and indoing so..opened all the doors?
There's also an all round door unlock/lock switch on the drivers door.
Read the manual.
" I turned the engine off while going about 60 mph (careful not to lock the ignition switch or the stearing will also lock up). Anyway, the noise persists leaving me with more questions.

Not the best of ideas , as you have no brakes either other than the one stab. You also have no oil pressure, as your probably still in gear you have ya pistons bobbing up and down in not alot of oil, other than that that's been chucked about by the motion which isn't sufficient.
