XC V70 - Transmission Fluid change Topic is solved

I took my car in for service at the dealer and they wanted to change the transmission fluid to the tune of $350. I told them no and asked why so expensive. They say that it is the fluid that is so expensive because this model needs a special fluid, and that is what costs so much. They tell me regular transmission fluid will damage the transmission. Does anyone know if this is true?

XCs come with synthetic fluid which costs a lot more, but not that much more! That said, you could change it yourself for less than $100 using a top brand of synthetic and the how-to instructions available on this site. Volvospeed.com has a tutorial with pics. Don't take it to GypsyLube or one of those places. They don't have a clue.

Interesting, Volvo originally claimed this fluid would never need changing, but as we know, all trans fluid gets dirty.

The transmission fluid in your XC is a special product to match the compontents in the transmission. The friction surfaces of the clutches need certain friction modifiers in the fluid.

The only two ATFs I'm certain will work are either the Volvo product or Mobil 3309 You might also contact Red Line and ask if their D4 ATF is suitable for your transmission. You can do an internet search for Volvo dealerships that sell parts at better than usual prices.

The synthetic or conventional base oil in the transmission is not as important as the friction modifiers. I don't think Mobil 3309 is synthetic and I don't know if the Volvo ATF is syn. I prefer a syn, but the fluid specs MUST meet the transmission requirements.

What all does changing your own fluid involve for a '98 V70 XC? Any ideas for a novice? Do I need to use a machine? replace gaskets and filters? thanks.

I was wondering if any other volvo models require that sythetic fluid that you mentioned.

and search within it -- use your browser's search (CTL-F) -- for the phrase "trans" without the quotes and after the first 4 or 5 you'll get to at least three tips from MVS users on how to change fluid easily.
