Volvo 850 Climate control knob repair.
Volvo 850 Climate control knob repair.
I had one of my climate control knobs break at the mounting base and I was able to make a quick permanent repair of it. In addition to the broken knob I noticed that the other two were cracked and would fail eventually so I modified them all. The knob's base is an exact fit for a S&W40 caliber spent casing end. I marked the case and then cut it with a hack saw. Slide the brass band over the knobs base and the repair is better than new. The fit is so perfect that no glue is needed. I am attaching a photo to show the repair. I think the photo will do a much better job at explaining this.

Perfect repair!
I believe this is for the MCC system but please confirm. I would like to add this to the repair database but I want to get it properly categorized.

Welcome to MVS,
You can buy the knobs new from a dealer or you can likely get them salvage from a company like Erie Vo-Vo, they have a link at the top of the page but call them rather than e-mailing them. If you can find one at a local salvage yard then you can save the freight which is likely more than the part itself is worth. If you need other stuff a lot of salvage yards have the "pocket provision" on stuff that they have not yet removed - if it fits in your pocket it is free with any other purchase.

Lee, the photo shows ECC knobs. The MCC knobs are completely different shape, and the area in question is not even round. I have a '95 850 GLT Vagen, and I just replaced broken knobs and stripped gears in the MCC (better half turned them "too far").
There is a post on Volvoforums that shows how to remove the MCC... thank goodness I managed to do the repair with parts from a salvage MCC. Removing the MCC cables would have been an extreme hassle.
