How good are you with a wrench?
I just did the inner/outer tie rods on my 2000XC. I've done a few repairs before, but this was probably my biggest, and it still only took me about 4 hours start to finish.
I used this writeup: http://www.v70xc.com/resources/how-to/p ... e-rods.pdf
All the parts + alignment cost me about $200 as opposed to my mechanic who quoted me $600 for the whole thing WITHOUT an alignment, so figure closer to $700.
As for the timing belt, you can DIY as well. It's definitely trickier, but there are also very good writeup around here if you are so inclined. Personally, I would probably take it in for the belt. But tie rods I highly recommend doing yourself! Good luck!

Replacing your timing belt is quite easy on these cars compared to other Euro and Imports. If you are pretty mechanically inclined you will spend about 3 hours the first time and it will get easier every time after that.
