Hey there, Island Guy.
Couple of things. First off, there were straight ahead AWD V70's, XC's and R's.
If you have an R, There should be an R badge on the tailgate, but the real clue
is the suede-like inserts in the seats. Usually, the PO will let you know it's an R.

As for the electrical issues? No Thing At All. The mechanical part of the switch
is messed up, but the electrical part is most likely just fine. It's just not
getting turned because the key part is Tango Uniform. Fix one? Fix both!

Some other Good News? '99 on up uses a key with a transponder in the head for security.
The '98 doesn't need the expensive key and dealer programming, so you're saving!

You can save even more by getting the fresh part at a price friendly dealer.
Call these guys for killer mail out parts prices:

A followup to my work around for this problem. This morning, I was not able to get the key to catch in the ignition cylinder, even after moving the locked steering wheel away from the left or right lock. My problem may have been solved by some more force:

With the wheel at the full left lock, I turned it HARD to the full right lock, and the plastic sleeve of the steering column moved a bit to the right; assuming some column internals moved with it. Same happened if I turned it hard to the full left lock. I used this method to move the steering column into various positions - left, right, or centered. In one of these positions, I was able to carefully take the steering wheel load off the lock and everything worked.

There's a chance this failure to catch was caused by a parasitic electrical load from my front passenger door lock button being partially depressed. Regardless, it's time for a new ignition lock cylinder.
