Hello
I have a problem with my 2000 model V70 5 speed auto. When the car is shifting from 2nd to 3rd, it hunts in and out of gear for a few seconds and shuts the throttle down until it engages with a bang then re-accelerates. Sometimes it shudders on the shift as well. This only happens after 10 to 15 km of driving from cold start. When transmission is cold this does not happen, it shifts normally. This problem appeared approx 18 months ago and flushing the oil stopped it for six months, flushed oil again and only stopped problem for 2 months. I have recently had the car in a transmission shop and had the gearbox removed and dismantled. Upon removal, they found the front clutch slighty burnt, not bad though, and evidence of the brake band for third gear had signs that it had been slipping. Had gearbox rebuilt and problem persisted - no change. Contacted my local Volvo dealer and explained the issue and was told to replace the valve body. I spoke with a few more transmission places and they agreed and replaced the valve body with a new Volvo part. Slipping on gear change is now worse and there is now a delay into reverse. I took the car to a Volvo dealer and had the software version checked. It was up to date, Volvo clean earths and checked circuits to transmission from ecu and all checked ok. They sent a help request to Volvo technical and they have not seen a car with this problem in this country. They suggested to borrow or replace ecu for transmission. I obtained a 2nd hand transmission ecu and had it matched to the vehicle by Volvo but still no change. Volvo said that the oil flow from the cooler lines when the engine is running appears lower than normal. Transmission shop have said pressure check on gearbox is ok. The transmission shop do not know where to go from here and are wanting to put a 2nd hand gearbox in and Volvo want to put an exchange unit in. I have outlayed a great amount of money at this stage and am concerned that a replacement gearbox may not fix the issue so I was wondering if anyone else has come accross this issue. The car has done 280,000 km.
Thanks.

Almost 200K miles, whew.
I believe that the 1st repair/rebuild shop is to blame.
Part of a PROPER rebuild is a new valve body, cluches, bands and solonoids, anything less is NOT a rebuild and your money was wasted.
Oh BTW during any of this and ESPECIALLY after the rebuild, were the adaptors reset and the new drive cycle performed. Was new software downloadad? All this must be done.
If your dealer did not do this, they're a bunch of morons!
Saying that, if they didn't do all this, I suspect that they don't know how to rebuild these trannies, (they're not easy and a good shop has to rebuild a few to get it right)
WHO is supposed to pay for the "new-factory rebuilt) tranny?
The 1st shop owes you big time

I thought that these trans could only be reliably rebuilt by Volvo?

No they can be, you just need to find someone who has done a few.
We have a shop here who rebuilds them (successfully), but it took them several failures until they got the hang of it, practice makes perfect.
They have done over 100 by now!

Does anyone have any recommendations for any shops in the S.F. Bay Area (or even outside the area) that have done proper rebuilds of the 2001 V70 XC tranny, with markings 50-55SN on it?
Thanks in advance,
Dennis McEntire
