Synthetic vs. Mineral Oil - pros and cons?

My 96 850 GLT has 110,000 on it. I bought it at 75,000 and used regular motor oil until a recent visit to a certified Volvo mechanic who suggested I switch to synthetic. A friend of mine suggested that its not worth switching to synthetic at this stage because it can cause leaks to form. Seeing how the Volvo mechanic also wanted to charge me $250 labor to install an ABS module which I swapped out in 1/2 hour I thought I would get some other opinions about this change. The car is most often used for highway driving and I live in the northeast US (i.e. cold). Thanks for your opinions. J
