Rear end probs, I think this may be serious!! Bill help

Post by rainbowwillow63 »

As you know, I have a '90 240 SW that has 240,000 on it and runs like a top. Yesterday I started driving and it started to thump really bad and felt just like both rear wheels were locked up. It felt like I was dragging the car, I know it's RWD and that's not happening. It's really cold here so I thought it was just a brake hanging up so I accelerated and it felt like it let loose. Then it did it again while I was driving. I drove home with it like that. Every so often it would "break loose" and drive fine. I did notice that it does it in forward and reverse. I went out today and got under it to see if anything was leaking or hanging down-nothing was. There is also no noise, rubbing, sqealing, scraping, etc. Nor was there any noise before this happened. I'm really bummed out over this

I drive people around everyday in it. That's how I make money-No car, no money well, you know how that goes:) PLEASE help me!! I love this car and don't want to get rid of it.

Okay, this is the best way to describe the "thumping" and such.

Think of this as a FWD. It feels like the back wheels are completely locked up and I am dragging the rear end forward. The thumping is from dragging it. The faster I go, the more it does it. Sometimes if I speed up it "breaks" loose-by that I mean it feels like the rear end "unfreezes" and it goes ok again. When I slow down to turn or start moving again, it happens again.

Now, I realize that this is RWD but that's what it feels like.
FYI, I changed the rear brake pads, calipers, and lines in Sept. and I have not used the E-brake at all since I got it

The first thing that comes to mind is when you pull the e-brake on, although you never do and, I shall add, neither do I, does the lever have a long travel before it stops? If it does check the e-brake shoes. They have a nasty habit of dropping the lining off. Sometimes it will lock up and then go for quite some time before it happens again.

I did one like this a few months ago for a friend. The lining had actually broken into four parts.

 Problem SOLVED!! Thanks guys. It was the center support bearing and cushion. It started getting really bad so I finally broke down and took it to the garage that had been servicing it when the last owner had it (who is also my cousins Exhusband  ). We put it up and the cushion fell out in his hand. So, he replaced the bearing and cushion. At first, he quoted me $375.00 for labor and parts which I was only going to pay because I couldn't do it myself
I went to pick it up and cry when I handed him the money. He handed me the bill and I almost fell over. He charged me $160.00!!!!!!! He said-That's what friends and family do :D
Unbelievable, especially since I hadn't spoken to him in about 23 years!!
It's really great to know that there are people out there that still believe that.
Oh, BTW we have 3 1/2 FEET of snow here

Well, I missed that one. I've never known a centre bearing lock the wheels, but I've never seen one that fell out like that.

Good to know you didn't have to shed tears about the bill. We still have some very decent people about, despite what the media say.

We only have 8 inches of snow. My son, who lives about 1 mile away but 200 feet higher, has just over 12 inches. This reminds me of the winters we had in the 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s when life went on without too much upheaval. Today the country is virtually at a standstill because no-one was ready for heavy snow and most drivers can't cope with it. My snow tyres have been on for 2 months and, as usual, my neighbours laughed at me. I had the last laugh this morning when I was the only one not digging and pushing to get my car moving.

Yeah, I hear that. My friends told me 3 weeks ago to get All season tires on the car. Well, they have a 4 wheel drive truck with AS's on it and my car can go through more snow!! Jokes on them
