This is timely. I'm going to do the same thing because my PCV system is completely clear yet still smokes.
When I pull the dipstick out I get practically zero leakage from the RMS.
Supplemental PCV system?

This is awesome! If I can't figure out why mine still smokes, I might rig up something like this for mine too. Thanks!

How does this "relieve" the PCV system? Aren't you simply collecting the white smoke in a jar instead of the engine bay?

That is really cool alternative, does it really act like the original? anybody have picture or step by step process of PCV overhaul available? I'm assuming its not a hard repair.
1994 Volvo 855 Sportswagon 185k
It relieves the pressure out of the dipstick tube, combines with the factory PCV vapor canister output (with the brass tee), then collects the moisture/vapors in the jar then sends the gases back to the flame trap housing (without the flame trap) and into the intake minus oil dropletspolskamafia mjl wrote:How does this "relieve" the PCV system? The factory PCV is probably still venting but with much less efficiency, That's why it's a supplemental rather than replacement of the factory PCV system.

The setup for an N/A model is slightly different (mainly the flame trap), but you will be able to tell from the PCV diagram what parts are different.

Any oil in your catch can? I'm tempted to use a catch can with a breather filter on it rather than rerouting back into the intake for my "off road use only." I've changed out the PCV and still have smoke from the dipstick. This could save my seals before it is too late.

Update, it's been 2 weeks of driving around town with the peanut butter jar/catch can setup, it caught about 1/3 jar worth of liquid, mainly condensation and some oil. My garage smells of oil vapor because the tubes into the jar are not air tight, I'll need to think about a more permanent containment device
here are some photos:

Jar with steel wool, notice the level of condensation at the bottom.

Steel wool removed, they soaked up quite a load of fluid!

Ironically, the fluid has color like peanut butter
