Hi RobTheModd,
Here what I found:
1. 2 loose screws that supposed to secure the power window control panel; looked like the previous owner had someone done mickymouse work (could be the same problem) on this door since some damage also done on the speaker housing area.
2. I heard noice when I shook the driver door that convinced me that the info that "960fasterthanmy940" gave is correct. However I have to
stop since I'm not sure how to take off the panel. I now know how to proceed after searching this morning. The problem is now going to find that metal + plastic part at the junkyard than taking the panel off.
Thanks for asking and how's your door problem? Solved?

yep, took me about 20 minutes, once i unbolted the old catch it preceded to fall in about a million pieces. then maneuvered the new one in and bolted it back in place... really need to invest in a magnetic tool set because i lost another Torque head bit.diyer97 wrote:Hi RobTheModd,

and now i have a working door. kinda weird that i dont have to hold it when opening.
but i like knowing its not swinging where ever it wants now.
Hi 960fasterthanmy940,
How does your search for that combo piece of metal and plastic turn out? I just finished putting back the door panel back and did find that identical piece of metal + plastic. It broke just like your pic showed but I also found a spring at the bottom of the door.
I figure that this piece of metal +plastic connected to the metal rod thru the O-ring at one end and at the other end (broken end in pic) connected to the spring and this spring in turn connected to the exterior
door lever. I speculate its assembly like this since I didn't feel the pull-back force that I felt when pulling the lever on operative door.
If you done with your fixing can you tell how do i access this spot to
replace this broken part .(do i must remove the exterior door handle to
do it?....
Thanks,

960fasterthanmy940 was absolutely correct.
I found some identical pieces at the junkyards, some in the late 80's model and the parts made of hard rubbers that are still in pretty good
compared to my broken one ... I noticed those new parts made of plastics, rubbers, vinyls..(windshield tank cover, oil stick handle etc .aren't durable like their counterparts ) in early years of volvo.. Volvo seems to be headed the same direction that American cars go...or worse ..recently Volvo
was accquired by the Chinese car maker. I still like my 83 240DL more than my 960 in some aspects.

Sorry for the late reply, got REALLY busy (no I have not had a chance to fix my doors yet...) Hamilton's Corner Garage just south of Guelph, ON (519-822-3297) does have some handles available. From what they say, intact handles are pretty rare. They offered a working front and rear with first section of wire for 170 Canadian with tax.
I think I will pick up new ones at the dealer though. For 189 (ouch) each and a warranty it I will feel a "little" better.
Now my lights are slightly flickering at idle...forums say alternater is sketchy.. SUPER!
Have fun, keep 'em sliding!

On this note and to this end, does anyone have the volvo sercive manual drawing? I fogot to ask the service tech at volvo to print me a copy.
Its just 3 bolts to remove the exterior door handle but I would like to see a non broken version (looking to to a quick 3d model of it, then have it made in deralin or some other resilient material - mmmm cnc'd carbon)

Ok guys (gals?) picked up the parts at Hamilton Corners garage/Volvo graveyard and have been photo-documenting the process (if you do find some used handles of a different colour than your vehicle - rejoyce! the inner mechanism is removable). Should have the whole thing up and done tonight..

Hello Volvo Folks.. I have a 960 with the same issue. Door will open from front inside drivers door but not from the exterior handle.. I seen a video online and decided to take on the job. Pulled out the handle and replace the part that I bought from eBay.. has been a year and still working great here is the link just in case you guys want to save some money..
