04' S80 no oil pressure warning message

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

04' S80 no oil pressure warning message

Post by S80 in CT »

I am new to this forum and looking for some feedback with this situation.

2004, S80 2.5T AWD
85,000 miles
in Connecticut

It was 14,000 miles since my last oil change (wive's car but no excuse). The oil light came on and I stopped to check level. It needed a quart so I put in 5w -30. Drove approx 6 miles home and just before I got home the oil light came on again and with the message "no oil pressure, stop safely"
Had the car towed to a dealership for repair.

I was called with the info that since the oil level was low the pump had picked up sludge from the bottom of the pan and pushed it past the filter, through the engine. And that the engine is shot!

My questions are:
Most importantly- Has anyone else heard of this happening?
Can the engine be "flushed" or cleaned? Instead of replacing? Is it worth repairing and can be driven reliably?
Dealer has found a rebuilt engine with 58,000 miles and wants to charge $6,500 to replace.

I'm just not sure that a new engine is worth it.
Thanks for the feedback.

Well not much to say here other than what choice do you have? If you wait 14k to do an oil change, you are begging your engine to fail on you. Were not talking some 88 beater, THIS IS AN 04 WITH THE 5 CYLINDER ONE OF THE NICER S80'S MADE WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!

My questions are:
Most importantly- Has anyone else heard of this happening?
No oil change in 14k, enough said. Maybe if you put yourself in an air-tight room for 14 days you could survive?

Can the engine be "flushed" or cleaned? Instead of replacing?
If that was possible they would not tell you it needs to be replaced, no lubrication for the engine = catastrophic failure.

Is it worth repairing and can be driven reliably?
You didn't treat the car like it was worth much so maybe it is not worth it. Of course it can be driven reliably, except you neglected a $40 oil change and now you need a new engine.

Dealer has found a rebuilt engine with 58,000 miles and wants to charge $6,500 to replace
They probably found a USED engine, not a rebuilt. Hopefully the previous owner of said used engine changed his oil more regularly than you do.

Well thanks to you all who checked the forum out but never gave any feedback! The only "advice" I got was don't let this happen! Thanks alot!

Asking for help/feedback in this forum is useless!

PS- Had the car brought to another garage for a second opinon. Engine flushed and $250 later, the engine runs great again.

The reason they didn't give any feedback is probably because they were either shaking their head or laughing out loud. I just had to respond, that car is too nice to be run into the ground.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you didn't destroy the engine. It's a testament to the durability of the 5 cyl. When you don't change the oil in the car for 14k, then something bad happens and you come on here for advice, what did you expect?

This forum is one of the most informative sources for Volvo cars. It is filled with people who CARE about their cars and want to prolong the life of their vehicle and others. Questions about why your engine almost blew up after not changing your oil almost seems like you are joking.
