V70 - 2004 - $800 to reactivate my cruise control?
Volvo wants about $800 to reactivate my cruise control. Its $669 for the software from Volvo and about $150 for the dealer! What are the ways around this? I thought I paid for my software license when I bought the car and would be charged nominal fees for changes. I didn't ask! Sounds like the credit card companies to me.

$800 to reactivate cruise control? That is serious money for a software upgrade.
Did you call other dealers? There should be a dozen within 100 miles of you.
What caused the cruise control software programming to fail, or get erased?

Matt:
The previous owner asked the dealer - Coast Volvo (Sarasota) to disable the cruise. Coast chose to change the software and charge her over $300. My thoughts are there were other options to disable the cruise like disconnecting the lead from the on/off switch - but then how could you charge $300 or so?
Volvo wants $669 plus tax for the software and Coast wants about $150 labor. Coast claims to have no clout with Volvo to get the software. Volvo in NJ is no help.

Don't take one dealer's word for it. Rarely do several dealers have the same story with their explanations/charges/excuses. They're all completely seperate businesses. Call around.

Do you have the part number for the software? I HIGHLY doubt there is a $669 piece of software. I have asked a few tech's and off the top of their heads they have never heard of the cruise control software removal or cruise control software re-load. Especially not at $669.
I was wondering why not just not use it in the first place? Why would the original owner not just keep the $300 bucks and not use it....Too late for that now though.
I agree on the multiple different opinions like Matthew said, they are all very much not created equal. Good luck.

I found a cruise control removal part number. It only costs $20 bucks plus the cost of labor. The only way I can see that they would charge you this much is if they were changing other parts like the switch, and even then, I have no idea how they got to $669. Get a second quote.
