Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.
Has anyone put (or seen anywhere) a V-8 small block chevy in a volvo?
or a 4.3/4.8 chevy?
It would be a cheap sleeper...
I'm thinking it would not even be close but wanted to throw it out there.
I have seen a bunch of them in the 240s but I have not seen a swap into an 850 or a V or S series front wheel drive car.
A 245 with a built up Chevy 350 is the ultimate street sleeper / grocery getter. The only trick is to find one that hasn't rusted to death. The reaction at the stop light is WTF!
I could not imagine the v8 fitting in the engine bay of a S/V/C70 or an 850. The engine bay is just to small. I have seen Chevy v8s in the 200/700/900 series cars. There is a how-to book you can buy that shows you how to get the motor in.
Since you posted this question in The Volvo 850, S70, V70 and XC70 (1992-2000) forum, I am assuming you are suggesting the swap in one of these forum specific FWD automobiles.
As others have mentioned, there have been several swaps in the RWD Volvos, pretty much everything under the sun. However the FWD platforms don't make for an easy swap. Anything is possible with the talent or money to do so, so I'm not going to say it can't be done.
Seems like I saw a swap of an older TDI in a FWD Volvo on TDIclub.com some years ago, but that's just from memory. Not what you're asking for I know, just a unique swap.
When my n/a 850 GLT needed a new engine, I considered several options including a motor from a turbo 850, and investigated some GM drive trains. The Supercharged 3.8L found in the FWD Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, SS Monte Carlo, and some Buicks was pretty appealing, and "cheap" for what they are, but I need a commuter car, not sleeper, or project that would take a year or better for me to get all of the gremlins worked out of. So I just got another n/a 20V as a replacement. I'm rambling now... In my opinion there are better platforms in the Volvo world to build sleeper big motor cars of than any in this forum.
If I wanted a sleeper 850, I'd buy a Turbo 850, mod the crap out of it, and swap all of the Turbo/R badges/emblems for GLT or just the plain old 850.
Hello guys,
I appreciate the insight. My xc70 has a rear diff that is close to the size of my yukon xl. Is there no way of attaching the driveline to the rear diff like a normal rwd vehicle?
It was just a random idea I had after I saw someone stuff a 5.3 into a BMW 325, the project would be a little out of my league anyway and cost more than it would be worth.
Thanks...
Step one: Get a degree in mechanical engineering.
Step two: ???
Step three: Blow people's minds at stop lights.
Seriously though, I agree with the other posters that it probably can't be done. I use the word "can't" loosely, as I'm sure there is SOME way to do it but it's probably not recommended. Go get an old 240 and use the v8lvo method. Those things are ridiculously awesome.
