1998 V70 shakes when you start vehicle...

Post by jasonmk12 »

Problem is in the steering wheel. You start the car, the steering wheel feels like it shakes for about 2 seconds and then it is gone. Anyone ever have this happen to them?

More of a vibration at start up more than anything else. Motor mounts (at least the top one) are fairly new.

Thanks

Jason

Does it feel like it's running on all cylinders?

I know sometimes if I let mine sit for a few days, oil gets down in one of the cylinders and it blows a bunch of smoke and shakes a lot before it starts firing right again.

You could also check the lower mounts...was the top one by chance replaced with a polyurethane mount?

It sounds like either a upper firewall mount and/or upper engine torque mount. I had the same thing happen to me on my 850 when both those mounts went bad. I replace the engine one with poly and the firewall with the standard rubber mount.

I was messing around with Volvo tonight and had a friend start the car with my hand on the upper firewall mount and it seems to be the culprit. Looks to be original, 140k, and it has lots of movement in it at the end of the ignition cycle when first starting the engine, which is when you can feel it in the steering wheel. Thanks everyone for the help

any tips on replacing that particular item. It looks like you have to take windshield wipers off, take the entire gray/black cover that is under the windshield off, remove the nuts, remove unit, replace with new, put it all back together? Anyone have torque specs on that? Thanks to all who have helped with ideas.

This contains the torque specs you wanted as well, hope this helps! It's one of the few VADIS things that actually kind of gives you an idea of what to do other than saying 'unscrew and remove'.
