2002 XC-70 Instrument Cluster Removal

Post by d2medic »

I need to remove the instrument cluster in my 02' XC-70. I've been looking through the site and can find instructions for 850's and others but none specific to an XC-70. Are there specific instructions or are all about the same? If there are, can you point me in the right direction or supply the step by step?

Thanks,

d2medic

It's really quite easy on your car.
Lower your steering wheel and pull it out to the extended position to give you more room, then:
1. Make sure your car is off and your key completely pulled out of the ignition and wait at least a minute (this is very important).
2. Pull the plastic surround that is around your instrument cluster straight out and out of the way (a bit of a tug...get it out evenly so you don't break it).
3. There are 4 screws that hold the instrument cluster in place...one in each corner. Undo them and then disconnect the connector in the back and your instrument cluster will come straight out.

When reinstalling, don't turn your key on until everything is plugged back up and in its place.

Thank you. I was afraid that I'd have to reconstruct another vehicle.

No problem! Keep us posted.
Just curious- why are you removing it anyway?
If you're putting a new cluster in, you'll need the dealer to do a download to get it to work with your car- not sure if a used one will even work with your car- it may have to be a virgin one that hasn't been "mated" to another car before.

No. I've had an intermittant high-beam indicator light for about 4 months. My "better half" has been bugging me to fix it and I didn't want to get into what I thought would be an 8 hour teardown to get to the light.
It was easy (with your explanation). Took about 15 minutes from start to finish. Works great now!

Thanks again,

This is like "stringing up the lights" at Christmas!! I took out the dash, changed lights (Highbeam indicator light with left turnsignal indicator light). High beam worked fine for a few days, now it's intermittant again.
Any suggestions??!!

Thanks,

Clean the sockets...use an emery board or fine sand paper for a better connection.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. You really are a big help to those of us who aren't "Volvically Inclined".

Let there be light!!!!

I finally found a place that fixed my 2002 XC-70 high beam indicater light intermitancy problem. It's a speedometer repair shop in Lancaster, PA know as Powl's Speedometer. They're on the web at this path:

http://www.powls-speedometer.com/

The problem was that the "pins" on the "computer" were cracked. Great material use by Volvo. These guys took the instrument cluster, soldered the pins (there was more than one that was broken) and it has worked since.

These guys are great, fast, and do good quality work.

Thanks to all the members for their advice. It really helped in diagnosing the problem.
