I'm a little overwhelmed by the all the different oxygen sensors available.

this is what I know so far:

P0032 - HO2S Heater Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 1

I also believe that this refers to the front oxygen sensor (but haven't been able to confirm that).

I prefer to stick with OEM parts, so this is really about finding the exact replacement part number.

Would appreciate any advice or shared experience with this repair.

Thank you,

Sebastian

Follow-up:

1. P0032 error code refers to the front sensor, the one in the exhaust manifold behind the engine. Good news: that's not that hard to access.

2. The OEM sensor for a 2001 V70 non-turbo is a Denso 234-9019. Bought it on Amazon for $148.71 plus tax and shipping. Bosch equivalent is $122.13 (Bosch 13626 Oxygen Sensor, OE Type Fitment).

(please use Amazon link under the navigation at the top of the page)

3. Taking out the old sensor was trickier than I thought. First, there isn't much room to turn a big wrench or to apply force easily while leaning over the engine. Second, I didn't want to cut the wire, so that in case I didn't get it out, I still had a sensor to plug into the system. Using Liquid Wrench over the course of a week, I was able to eventually get the old sensor out without any damage.

I unscrewed the cross brace on both sides (but not in the middle) and turned it ccw just enough to give me more room to work behind the engine. This took a minute and was well worth it.

(and big thanks to JDS60R for great sensor removal directions )

4. Threads looked fine. Cleaned the thread in the opening with a small wire brush. Took the new sensor and applied the anti-seize compound that came with it. I did so carefully in order to not get any compound on the sensor tip. Starting at the open end of the thread (closest to the tip) made sure that the compound would spread nicely as the sensor was being screwed in.

5. Any instruction stressed not to drop or bang the sensor.

6. Disconnected the battery for 15 minutes to reset the ECM. Error message has been cleared, and next comes the drive cycle.

7. I got the drive cycle instructions from this site, but I'm not sure how one person can do this on their own, even on a closed road. I reformatted the instructions in a way that I expect to be easier to follow (while also looking at the road, the traffic, the speedometer, the tachometer and a stopwatch!!!!). I think I'll be doing this with a copilot. BTW, there was a link on MVS to a drive cycle diagram, but the link is dead (anyone who can help?).

Now I just have to find a road that works (starting and stopping, going slow...). Not very likely in NYC. :)

8. The independent mechanic's version of the drive cycle seems to be: "You gotta drive around for about a hundred miles". I have no idea if this will do the trick, but there's a good chance I'll find out.

Hello skaupert (if you're still here) or anyone else for that matter,

I need to replace the upstream O2 sensor on my 2001 base model v70 so I was happy when I stumbled upon this thread. This will be my first attempt at maintenance so I am trying to get all my ducks in a row. The summary above was great but the only thing I didn't see was any description as to how difficult it is to disconnect and reconnect the sensor cable. Can anyone comment on this? I peeked under the hood and located the oxygen sensor on the exhaust manifold but didn't dig around much to see where the connector was.

Follow the wire. The socket/connector is a bit hard to reach, you'll need a long flat-blade screwdriver to release the plug. Inserting the new one is (somewhat) easier. Make sure you note the path of the wire and run the new one the same way (might seem obvious, but easy to miss if you just pull the old one out). Removed the pre-heater hose to have more space for my arms and hands, and a hand-held shop light helps a lot.

I managed the upper sensor using conventional tools, but ended up ordering the special oxygen sensor socket kit from idp for the lower sensor. Much easier in a tight space. Used liquid wrench in each case for a pre-treatment. Plus some gentle tapping with a ball-peen hammer.

All the best.

Wow, thanks for the quick response. While I have you....when you say "upper" and "lower" sensor, are you referring to upstream and downstream. I am only looking to replace the upstream and my understanding there is only one in that location. Again, I am pretty new to this but am interested in learning as much as possible. thanks again

Just confirming, by 'upper' I'm referring to the one before the cat, accessed in the engine compartment. 'Lower' refers to the one after the cat, accessed from underneath the car. In each location is only one sensor.

And if you don't have the manual, and you're just starting out, it might be worth getting. Go through Matthew's amazon link or use this one: http://amzn.to/ZjfHC4

Thanks, again. Got both the sensor and the manual on order. With any luck I'll be able to finally pass emissions here...
