Hi guys, just wondering, as posted before i'm still having issues( vibration) in my car when driving. this happened after i put in the winter tires on steel rims. When i got the car it had "volvo" mags and had no vibrations.
I'm wondering...."do volvo mags/rims have to be stock? are they that sensitive"??? some have told me yes, if you have not stock volvo rims/mags then there is a chance of vibration cause they are not precise fit.
Has this happened to you? or am i going nuts?
I tried installing my summer tires with the "volvo" mags today and noticed that when placing the mag on the hub it isn't a snug fit..it wobbled a bit...is this normal? I will be checking out a set of used mags that where on a 850 t5..i think they'll fit...5 bolt 16"
thanks

Hello fabs, If your car has no vibrations with your Summer tire/Volvo mags combination then you should be very happy in the first place as your car is smooth. Obviously the problem is with your snow tire/steel wheels combination. In all likelyhood one or more got wacked by a pot hole or slid sideways into a curbstone or is stored too close to the hot water heater. How old are your snows? A mechanic told me that wheels ride on the hub. I won't ever mount our Saab alloys without anti-seize on the hubs again. Those wheels didn't ride on the hub, they fused to the damn hub. Another mechanic told me that lug hardware (nuts or bolts) have conical shapes to center each of the holes in a wheel as you tighten them. Who speaks the better truth? Regarding your question of fit and sensitivity: Your "perfect" mags wobble a bit, you say. Do your steel wheels wobble to the same degree? If I had your questions I would try placing a Winter steelie on an axle right after removing a Summer mag; shifting and nudging both, trying to get a feel for the fit of each. Then I'd try installing two non-adjacient lugs and see how centered the remaining three holes were. If all four steel wheels seemed to land okay, I'd have the Winters road force balanced. The 1600 lbs. of force placed on the tire as it spins reveals much. Tires don't wear evenly. Sidewalls give out and seperate-sometimes subtely. You might have a bent wheel or two. FYI: You mentioned "...as posted before I'm still having issues...". Just reply to any old post and it'll jump to the front of the line so you don't have to restate everything. Another thing you could do, though a little impractical and non-conclusive, would be to get your hands on a Volvo steel wheel and see if it's the same as the steels you own. Shoddy quality might then be plainly visable. My money's on your snows being old and beat-on. Please post back and tell us what you do/learn. Kira

Are these hubcentric wheels?
(If you don't know what that means is is the center hole the same size as the hub and are they a snug fit?)
If not you will need to get hubcentric rings (or different wheels that fit properly)

Hi Guys..here's the dilly-o!
When i had my summer mags on, i had no vibration at all...really smooth. I odered brand new, hakka 5 studded tires with (i suppose) new steel rims. I've been told that with the steel rims, they must be snug as a button, meaning that once placed firmly on the hub you should be only able to spin the tire..it should not wobble on the hub without the lug nuts in place , but mine wobble. so no they are not hubcentric rims..they are aftermarket steel rims.
For my summer mags though..when i placed them on the hub, they where not snug..there was a bit of wobble, but i think that with mags, they don't need to be snug..just with steel rims..right??
I will be looking at a pair of used mags (from an 850 T5) which should fit okay..at least this will help...hopefully...at least tehy are "volvo" mags.
thanks

If your steel rims are aftermarket (CT perhaps?), then that is your problem. Most of the steel rims available in the Canadian aftermarket are really engineered for Fords which makes the bolt circle just a wee bit off and the hub centre too big by a fair amount. It become a pretty iffy proposition to get them to run smooth (don't ask me how I know this). You should be fine getting hold of some older style Volvo 16s, such as off a T5. Just put the steelies up on Kijiji and give them to some one with a Taurus.
Cheers,
Bill

im sure you probably figured it out buy now...but yes the volvo's are that picky.
i changed from OEM 17" Canistos on my 850 to Nebula Reps. volvo has (thinking off the top of my head might be wrong) a 65.3mm hub and the nebulas had a 67.1 its less than 2mm difference and i had to get centering rings because it would vibrate without em.
hope it helps
